I checked into the hotel on Tuesday 30th June. A pleasant male receptionist took my details and I was soon whisked off to room 304. I saw a notice on reception stating that they were currently unable to accept payment cards as their system was down stating that they could only accept cash payment. They said it should be working in a couple of days and that I could pay when checking out which would be 4 days later.

The next morning I awoke to find my arms covered in bites. I dressed and immediately went to reception to tell them about it. They said that they would check the room and a very miserable looking reception manager said "it's never happened before". To be honest I was not bothered about that I wanted to know what they would do now. I went for breakfast and after that back to reception where they informed me that they were moving me to another room, room 306. They offered to send someone to help me move which was a nice offer, however I declined.

After moving rooms I discovered that the bites were in fact all over my arms, legs, feet, stomach and back. I was covered in them. My skin was very itchy and sore so I took Antihistamine tablets and applied hydrocortisone cream. I was advised to avoid sunlight. The fact that I had gone to Sihanoukville for my birthday and to enjoy the beaches I was now basically confined to my room with the air conditioning on full to keep my body cool and ease the irritation

On the second night the wifi was not working in the room so I reported it to reception the next morning (it was still not working then either) only to be told by the reception manager that it was working ok in reception. As I did not get a signal from the reception in my room I asked if they could look into it. She said, with a look of anger on her face, that they would "call the company". Something I hear a lot in Cambodia.

Later that day the wifi came back on so I went to reception to thank them.

On checking out I noticed that the sign was still there saying no credit cards but they said they would try. Of course they came back and said it failed and that they could only accept cash. At this point the reception manager smiled. It made me wonder as they had such a well printed sign that this is more a permanent problem rather than temporary.

The hotel itself could be very nice. The staff are friendly, the pool seemed to be well maintained. The reception manager needs to learn how to deal with complaints. Looking at a customer as if they were something she had trodden in is certainly not the way.

The attached pictures are of the ceiling above the bar area and my legs and feet.

Thank you to room 304 for not only ruining my holiday in Sihanoukville but also my 55th birthday.

Hi Tomodavid! Thank you for a big review. We sincerely apologize for ruining your 55th bithday, and your negative experience during your stay at our hotel. It is obviously that we had several chances to make your stay a better experience, and we are also very sad that our normal routines have failed here. But thanks to your feedback (including the one you also gave us on booking.com), we are now more aware of our mistakes, and have allready taken serveral action, to improve this negative experience you had, to not happen again in the future. For your bites on your body, it was very sad to hear. We have routines to prevent this, but we failed here. We have now cleaned the room after regular standard, and will hopefully not cause anymore problems. Regarding our front office manager, I must admit that this is the first time we get a complaint on her. I have of course had talk with here, and she will hopefully keep giving our guest´s the great service, she normally provide. Regarding the payment of the creditcard and the internet: - Internett is unfortunate something that is not stabile in many places in Cambodia, during the rainseason. We are continously working to improve our internet- connection, because we know that it is very important for our guest, these days. This is also why we call the Internet- company, when it is not working 100 %, to be sure that we have a good quality on our Internet., for our guests. - This spring we have been experiencing a unstabile line to the banc, and often in periods, we try to avoid to much use of the creditcardmachine, and that is normally not a problem. For our guests We did try to charge your creditcard, but it was declined. Why I don´t know. But a support team from our banc, was here this week, to update all of our terminals, so hopefully our creditcard- machine will work everyday, in the future. Again, we thank you for taking the time, to write 2 reviews about us. We will use this to improve ourself, and we wish you back for another stay in the future, were you can experience the best of Grand Sihanoukville Hotel. Sincerely, Øyvind Maureniusson Owner

Well, it could be better and could be worse. The mattress isn't really too good for sleeping on. It was my wife's least favorite part of the hotel. The staff is helpful and very nice and the breakfast buffet was really pretty good. It was my first trip to Sihanoukville but I'm not sure if I'd pick this place again, but I've stayed in a lot worse places.

Lovely pool. Walking distance to most things including restaurants, beach, town centre.

This hotel is walking distance to restaurants, beach, pier. However BE WARNED, my handbag got ripped from around my neck as we walked home from dinner one night by 3 guys on a motorbike. The hotel location is on the edge of town and gets dark on the road. This happened 20m from the hotel gate. The security guard saw and just shrugged his shoulders - didn't ask if I was ok or offer any help. Reception weren't much better. The only help they offered was to tell me that I couldn't make international calls to cancel my credit cards. Great! So helpful! Again, no offer of help or reassurance when you'd hope they'd be there to help. Quite disappointing.

Sihanoukville has a really bad crime rate for bag snatching so watch yourself and limit what you carry when you stay here. Safe in room didn't work. The tuktuk drivers who hang outside are also complete rip-offs. Trying to charge us $10 for a trip - we hired a driver for the day in Siem Reap for this amount. Just say no and walk further down the street for a better price. Or they'll chase you if they really want you.

Dear DonsNZ, First, I would like to thank you for your straight and honest review. It helps us to improve tremendously. We are grateful that you enjoyed our pool. It is a popular one =) As for your experience with the bag outside the hotel, we our deeply troubled by that. It is not something we hear about among our guests, so I am glad you bring it up. We will look in to our routines regarding handling situations like that, so you or other guests feel well taken care of whenever feeling the need of help. Sihanoukville have had a bad reputation with crime and theft, although big measures are taken by the local authorities to lower crime of that sort. I know it doesn't change your experience, but can help if you ever thinking of coming back. We hope that we are fortunate enough to greet you welcome again at another time. Best regards, Rasmus, General Manager

First of all I've seen many other asian hotels and guesthouses. I have to say this is (for the price of 70$/night) one of the worst "hotels" ever. The outside/pool/breakfast area looks nice (although I did not consider a swim in the pool since birds trink from it and I guess therefore cannot be chlorinated at all).

Our room was ground level. It was in a very very poor state and smelled really disgusting.

But lets start with the bathroom:
uncleaned as we arrived, dirt and even MOLD everywhere. Relatively small but well that could be ok. But combining the toilet and the shower area is at least for my consideration not acceptable in this price category and reminds me of typical cambodian shacks which are great no offense but you know what I mean.
So, bathroom: 0*/5*

Now to the bedroom:
The mint green wall color: not my favorite.
We had a TV, a vault inside the closet and a minibar which was empty and unplugged.
The mattress was as comfy as marble tiles so dont expect a relaxing good night sleep. But then again thats a subjective discomfort.

Breakfast:
The food buffet was nothing special but ok and tasty.

Overall service:
Non-existent
We even had to ask for fresh towels which we didnt get.
After 2 days they were not able to clear our small table outside the room. Several empty glasses and 2 ashtrays just stand there.

The staff is friendly but sort of reserved, not the typical cambodian hospitality.

Resume:
I'm not philistine but the value for the money is definitely not appropiate. My personal price opinion max 20$
Do yourself the favor and just go to one of the many guesthouses in Sihanoukville and save the money. We couldnt, since every accomodation was fully booked, so if you plan to come here between xmas and new years plan long time in advance.

Dear Alexander N, Thank you for your straight and honest review. It really do help us to see our flaws and areas for improvement. Personally I am really concerned for what seems to have been a quite traumatic experience. I do apologies deeply if we did not meet your expectations. Although, with that said, me and my team are honestly quite surprised that someone had such a bad experience at our hotel. We work very hard every day to make sure that no-one is leaving the hotel this unhappy. We obviously failed this time. The price as you mention, is something that of course is up to everyone to evaluate. Though we are working with a dynamic pricing system, which means that some of our most busy days in the year, we are putting up the price a bit to meet the demand that is coming in peak season. Most of our guests do not have anything to say about that, but are rather happy regarding the quality they receive. Apparently it did not meet your expectations of a 70 dollar accommodation, and that is unfortunate for both of us. Concerning the pool, we do check the chlorine level each day at 06.00 am to make sure that it is as perfect it can be before the day starts for the guests. The pool is a popular place, for most of our guests, and now apparently the occasional bird enjoy it as well. You should have too ;) Regarding our level of cleaning, that is something we take very seriously. We have received a lot of good feedback concerning our cleanliness, but we are of course not perfect and are always looking to improve. So your feedback is very welcome. About the color of our walls and hardness of the mattres, it is a matter of taste as you say, but we will take it in to account as we plan our next investments. Summary: We feel sorry that your stay was not as you expected, and your points will be forwarded to operation. Hope your travels goes good, and we get the chance to welcome you back at another time, where we can exceed your expectations. All the best, Rasmus, General Manager

Any good things I have to say were overshadowed by the fact that myself and my friend had a 50 dollar bill and a 1000 baht note go missing from separate locked safes in separate rooms on our last night. There is no confusion, no miss counting of money, this absolutely happened with absolute certainty. A disgraceful betrayal of trust that should never happen in any hotel.

Dear Paul S Thank you for taking the time to write us a feedback after your stay at our Hotel. We deeply apologize for any missing money during your stay at our Hotel. But we have increased the security at the hotel, and increased the number of camera´s, to prevent anything like this happening in the future. We always take our guests feedback seriously, and take the security of our guests and our guests belongings, at the highest priority. Hopefully this will never happen again in the future. I have never reviewed a hotel without positives but I guess there is always a first time....

I checked into the Grand Sihanouk Ville Hotel on the 6th of December.

When I arrived, I thought my driver was dropping me off at the back delivery area! Check in was easy, a guy showed me to my room (no offer to help me with my luggage).

A key paddle is required for room power so it was hot.

I went out for a few hours to have a look around. When I got back, the room was like a sweat box. Bare wires were hanging out of the ceiling and wall in the "bathroom" (bathroom is an over statement) surrounded by peeling paint. The so called shower was straight over the top of the toilet and everything else so everything got soaked. Numerous lights in the room weren't working, the tv remote didn't work nor did the manual controls on the tv. The aircon was the most noisy thing in the building and did nothing to cool the room.

I went down to the reception and politely complained. After much discussion, I was told they may be able to look at the problems in the morning. I walked away and headed back out for a couple of hours. When I returned, the aircon was set at 16, full fan, I was laying on top of the bed and sweating whilst also being deafened by the noise of the aircon. I went back down to the reception and requested a room change, I was told that they were fully booked. In the end they offered me a room that their staff use, a thin mattress on the floor! Obviously unhappy with all of this, I went back to my room, packed and booked a different hotel just around the corner (I will review The Palm Palace separately but it is brand new). The guy at the reception did try to keep me there but as I had made the booking it was too late.

Sorry for the long story but in short, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!

I had traveled to so many places in the world but this is the first time I have ever walked out to another hotel. I never had high expectations but given the Trip Advisor rating I decided to go with it. Worst hotel I have ever stayed at in my world of travel.

I guess I should try and finish on some sort of positive note but struggling to think of anything, sorry....

Dear jumpingbunny69. Thank you for staying at our Hotel and for taking your time to rate us. We always strive to deliver service at the highest level possible and feedback from our guest helps us to improve and develop our product. We deeply apologize for what seems to be a horrible stay for you at our Hotel. We are very sorry for not meeting your standard of expectations and we are very disappointed. It looks like that we failed with everything during your stay! Although, with that said, me and my team are honestly quite surprised that someone had such a bad experience at our hotel. We work very hard every day to make sure that no-one is leaving the hotel unhappy. Our front desk tried very hard to satisfy you, and we also gave you the opportunity to check out the same day, free of charge of course. But, you wanted to fight us, and stay the same day at arrival! We understand that our Hotel is not for everyone: Grand Sihanoukville Hotel, is a Good Value 3 star Scandinavian/Cambodian Hotel, for families and travelers on medium, reasonable budgets. We will suggest you to higher your price range when you are looking for Hotels here in Cambodia. But no-one is perfect and we obviously failed this time. Again, we deeply apologize for everything. In spite of this, we hope you will reconsider to stay at our Hotel again, where you will experience the best of Grand Sihanoukville Hotel. Have a nice day! Kind Regards Team GSVH
