The room was decent - everything you can expect from a basic motel. Staff was not too friendly and could have been more helpful with some questions that I had. And the weekend price was far higher than what I expected to pay for such a basic establishment.
My first impression of this place is that it's a stereotypical 1950s roadside motor inn. The decor is around the same period too, right down to the same picture over the bed that my father had hanging in his office in the 1970s! The pool in the parking lot kinda adds to the kitsch. I did appreciate that in the hotel check-in area they have menus from the few area restaurants on display. Quite helpful. For the room, although the furniture seemed like it was 50 years old, it was clean and functional. So it's fine for a night, but I wouldn't want to plan a whole vacation here.
I made a reservation for this place through Booking.com. California just put restrictions on travel, so I called the motel. The guy who answered told me twice that people who are going to Joshua Tree NP are okay to travel. That didn't sound right. So I checked with the San Bernardino Dept of Health, who said absolutely not. I'm not happy about being lied to. This could have really messed up our plans.
Pulled into the motel late Friday night and was a bit concerned. The motel doesn't have the greatest curb appeal and honestly looked a little seedy from the outside. However, the rooms were actually decent, spacious with recent paint and the beds were clean and comfortable. It is literally right next to the highway so there was some traffic noise but not terrible. They do have a pool but this was in November and it was cold & windy so we never went swimming. There's a small market walking distance down the road which was nice. Really my only complaint was a terribly squeaky bathroom door that probably could have been remedied by a little WD40. All in all, for the price this place would be hard to beat.
Located a 5 minute drive from the park entrance, High Desert Motel was clean and quiet. The staff was courteous and friendly. The room itself was nothing fancy, but functional. The price was very affordable. The convenience of the location makes this a recommended motel.
