The (very small) tentground not marked at all at att spot, even though very important for the staff were You put the tent, so You risk beeing asked to move your tent afterwards. Small cottages paint falling of the outside walls, giving poor impression. On the good side is a nice playing ground for young ones, a nice kitchen, and a very nice location concerning the roaring river.
Stunning surroundings where the river's white water is right at your sight and your hear the humming of the water. Prices are reasonable, the place is well kept and all the amenities are modern. Mixed sauna, open for all at any time. No additional charge. However since there was a lot of snow, the doors of the saunas were not opening. Plenty of outdoor stuff to do (ice fishing, fat biking, sledging) and possibility to "hop" between Finland and Sweden e.g. by visiting Tornio by car or by crossing the frozen river as we did :D
Great place for camping, renting a cottage or just staying at the hotel building. Stunning surroundings where the river's white water is right at your sight and your hear the humming of the water. Prices are reasonable, the place is well kept and all the amenities are modern. The saunas are amazing! Mixed sauna, open for all at any time. No additional charge. Breakfast and lunch buffet including local delicacies. Breakfast price currently at 80 kronor and lunch for 155 kronor. Plenty of outdoor stuff to do (fishing, white water rafting, hiking, biking) and possibility to "hop" between Finland and Sweden e.g. by visiting Tornio.
In mid-June we were the only people sleeping in a tent. We liked the facilities offered at the camping - big, light kitchen, with refrigerators for the use by guests and lot of tables to sit around. Just next to the kitchen is one of the saunas (all included in the price) - we liked it as it was still cold in Finland. Showers and toiles were very clean. Location is very nice, just at the river bank with the view to Kukkolaforsen (cascades on the Torne river). There's a small fishing museum and also a restaurant in the reception house. We paid 270 SEK per night for 2 persons, a tent and a car at the camping site. Good value.
We spend four nights at Kukkolaforsen with good friends in July. it's a great place, food is excellent and staff is very friendly and welcoming. lots of activities and interesting things to see and do while you are there. And you are only on hour away from the Polar circle so there is light all night during summertime. haparanda is only 30 minutes away. Going here will give you a unique experience off the beaten track
Big rooms/cottages with big table inside. Free parking close to room. Shower and toilet on room. Patio with chairs. Internet is paid. Missing ashtray. Much cleaning rules. Showers have only plastic blanket.
Small camping just by the water. A bit more expensive than average but OK service buildings and a good choice of saunas that are for free. One nice thing is that you can buy a plate of specialties to bring to you tent or cabin and enjoy
After an excellent dinner on the terrace of the on-site restaurant we were shocked when we went into the two bedroom cottage we had rented for the night. That the place had certainly seen better days is an under statement. The sofa was worn in several places wit the foam rubber padding showing through. The shower room was so in need of repair that it did not encourage taking a shower. The kitchenette was ill-equipped. We had our own bed linen and towels with us - a common practice in holiday villages in Scandinavia but the over-night renal was exorbitant and bore no relation to the standard of the accommodation. I would recommend taking a look at a cottage before deciding to stay.
Kukkolaforsen is (locally) famous for the Bastuakademien (sauna), the white water rapids, and actually also for the Restaurant. In addition, it is a camping place where you can set up your tent, park your camper or rent your cottage. Since we like some comfort, we enjoyed a cottage stay in July 2012 and we also returned for another stay in October. Kukkolaforsen is well located to explore the nearby countryside and the twin cities of Haparanda and Torneå. In July, the weather was really good and we enjoyed sitting outside of the cottage enjoying the water passing. The October stay was somewhat different though sunny this time too. We have made use of two types of cottages. A smaller one with basically only one room and a bathroom, and a bigger one with two bedrooms and a separate common area. Both types are usable and have the basic commodities you need over a weekend stay or so. The reception is in the main building where also the restaurant is located. A further building is for the campers with toilets and showers, a sauna, washing and kitchen facilities. There are different types of saunas available for the guests. So you can pick if you want tininess, wood heated, traditional, etc. During summer, the well known delicatessen, smoked whitefish (sik) is for sale and can usually also be enjoyed in the restaurant. Kukkolaforsen was pretty deserted during our October stay due to off-season. The restaurant was closed and only few campers stayed overnight during the weekend. The staff was friendly and even called before arrival to make sure that we found the place and they also warned us about road-works and suggested alternative routes to take. The Restaurant is good but a bit pricy. The main attraction is really the rapids. The location are though also good and the cottages are of decent standard. The rates are fair. So, all-in-all, well worth staying there. We will most probably return next summer.…
