Do not attempt to camp here in 2017. The camp is closed and will not open this year due to damage on the one and only bridge that crosses the San Joaquin River into camp. The huge amount of rainfall this year and flood releases...More
We stayed in the Campground close to Florence lake.

Yes Florence Lake is right above the camp. It is a very deep cold canyon type lake. There is a small lake store that rents boats for fishing or pleasure and there is a ferry service that will take you across the lake to where the water comes in. It is commonly used by hikers coming to resupply during their high Sierra hike on the John Muir Trail. The lake is very cold do not the best for swimming. Shore fishing isn't great either. By boat is best. Their are several day camp sites available first come first serve (no overnight) with picnic tables, BBQ grills, and fire pits. It is well worth the trip in my opinion.
