Smiley's is the perfect getaway for friends or family. We stayed at the hotel and loved it's proximity to everything, weekend live music, awesome food, and wonderful people. The community and energy of the place is what makes it stand out.
We stayed at Smileys for five days inNovember bc er. The entire staff was gracious, friendly, attentive and good at communicating. This is a bright, airy space with huge windows and a brand new renovation. The saloon staff were wonderful and we were lucky to be there on a night of outdoor live blues. Fantastic. The bed was super comfortable and the small kitchen well appointed. They made our dog very welcome too!
The bar seemed great but the hotel is literally right next to the bar, so you will hear a lot of noise and music, especially on a Saturday night, which is unfortunately when we stayed at the hotel (and also happens to be the most expensive night of the week for a room). Smiley's has concerts every Saturday so expect music to be blaring from 3pm to 10:30pm. Even after the music ended, some people loitered right outside our window and chatted loudly. My husband had a headache and wasn't able to rest in the room due to the music, we had to keep walking around in circles around the town until 10:30pm. This was a subpar experience for a room we paid >$300 for. The attached photo is the view from our window. You can see how close the DJ booth is to the room.
This historic saloon and hotel has been lovingly restored to be one of the most special hidden spots in Northern California. Each room is unique and the overall design is beautiful and fresh while also feeling somehow outside of time. Our room had all the amenities we needed--soft sheets, nice decor, really great hot shower, historic photos as art, comfortable furniture to hang out on, electric kettle for tea and coffee, and mini fridge with freezer. The saloon felt like the inside of a beautifully restored old wooden ship and the kitchen served great fresh Mexican -inspired meals. We loved the carnitas torta, pozole verde, and mezcal drink special. The bartenders and servers were sweet and there were good vibes among the locals and travelers having a drink or a meal. During our stay they had a special ceviche made from fresh fish caught locally from right down the street. We had a great time and are already dreaming of our next visit, hopefully when there's some live music in the saloon!…
I have experienced West Marin for over fifty years. Years ago this area was dotted with communes and abandoned ranches. In the early 70's there was an oil spill which brought hundreds of volunteers to cleanup. Many people liked the area and moved. Prosperous people came and have contributed in a respectful way. The area's response to COVID has been widely acknowledged. Smiley's has great live music and gets crowded on the weekend but it's still welcoming.Rooms are clean and tasteful. The town is walkable and very enjoyable. I don't think there are any other places in West Marin with a hotel and live music. The town is walkable. Loved it.
Never stayed but I used to play here with a band. Easy to get to: just follow the signs to Bolinas (which are regularly removed by residents who don't want to be found). Expect much tie-died shirts. Park yourself at the bar and let Smiley's happen to you. A time warp. (bonus for musicians: Smileys drink vouchers in the form of $3 bills)
We wandered in after having lunch to check the "oldest continuously operating" bar in California and maybe chat up some locals. The atmosphere was cool and the bartenders were friendly. The selection on tap was small but decent and the prices were good. A great experience and I look forward to another visit sometime soon.
If you are a dog lover,Bolinas is your kind of place. Laid back,it's the quiet side of this bay. We've been boogie boarding at Stinson Beach, the other side of Bolinas bay. But I prefer the quaint hotel, behind the oldest bar in California. Hiking trails everywhere at the Pt. Reyes National Seashore. Small shops, museum, art gallery, and extreme peacefulness at one of the coasts best getaways. Bolinas has been a birthday celebration place, and I highly reccommend it!!!!
I love this town! Bolinas is the rock that has remained relatively untouched by the tides of development money sloshing up and down the West coast, and Smiley's has remained steadfastly as simple and true to its roots as the modern tourism business allows. Don't let the cast of scruffy characters from central casting hanging out in front of the saloon scare you and the kids off, just go ahead and rent the very quiet room #3 with the 2 huge beds, picnic bench and turn-of-the-century desk (with no chair) where you'll be safe and can tuck the kids in and go down to hear the live music in the saloon while quaffing IPAs with the 12 "Smiley's bucks" they give you at check-in. If you detect attitude on the part of the barkeep, well that's just part of the show, folks. The cafe across the street has excellent dinners and don't miss the Bolinas (organic) People's Store for those 60's vibes.…
It was not very welcoming and the bartender, I can't remember her name I try to forget. What an attitude!!! Don't ask about the beer or any questions, that's too much to ask of her. We drank our drink's as fast as we could & left. How disappointing considering someone at Stinson Beach had recommended it.
