Great location in downtown Berkeley. That's about the only positive thing I have to say about this hostel. Old, filthy, worn-down and smelly - not what one should expect no matter the price. My best advice is to stay somewhere else.

The YMCA hotel it's pretty good if you're not a fussy person. The rooms are private and have everything you need for a comfortable stay, as a closet, chair, desk and mini fridge. Bathroom, washing machines, dining room and kitchen is for everybody, but this is actually pretty good cause you can make good friends there. The front desk staff... More

The best part about this "hotel" is the location. And the free use of the adjacent YMCA facility, otherwise I'd give it a 1. Before the trip I called for advice about parking and told it was impossible. I researched options and parked my car at the North Berkeley BART station for a nominal fee and walked back to the... The hotel offers no free parking. If you need to park your vehicle during the day, before 6:00pm, you will have to pay for parking. The Allston Way Parking Garage is nearby. You can park for free on the street after 6:00pm, when parking meters go dark. After 9:00am, you will have to pay .05 cents per two minutes, to... More

General basics of a hostel was fine, room was clean and things were fine. One problem, the service of the front desk. The times I met the front desk person, he wouldn't let us explain the situation and told us to stop and let him talk.

This hostel - not a hotel - is not to be recommended. We chose it because it seemed to be the cheapest option for staying in Berkeley. Unfortunately it is inhospitable; rather run-down and smelly. The communal kitchen is quite dirty. Don't even try to find a close parking spot which is affordable. Travel by BART and stay one night... More

The YMCA hostel was the best experience I had staying in Berkeley as a backpacker. It's cheap, safe, run by a dedicated staff, and reasonably clean. It's a budget hostel, not a hotel: facilities are shared, there's lots of young travelers, it may take until the next day until cleanup, and don't expect designer furniture in the rooms. But all... I stayed at the Berkeley YMCA when I arrived in Berkeley as a temporary solution until I found a room to rent. It is an affordable place considering the high prices of housing in Berkeley. Moreover you can use the gym and pool facilities in the building (probably useful if you stay for some weeks). The rooms are private (not... More

I visited some friends in San Francisco and needed an affordable place to stay. I don't like the bay area because everything is so expensive. And to a german guy the amount of homeless and drug-addicted people is really shocking. I did not want to pay 100 bucks per night, that' s why I chose the YMCA. The neighbourhood seems... More

The next best price I could find for a Berkeley Hotel was $100 more, so we went with the Y. It's too bad that sickness and time prevented us from making use of the great exercise facilities and pool because then the cost may really have been worth it. But, be prepared for mismatched furniture and bed coverings, bathrooms off... More

“Try to get a room on the fourth floor. The large rooms are just a little bit bigger with other bed squeezed in.”

“I had a good night's sleep, but there seemed to be room service going on at night (maybe some emergency? No idea), and my room had a slightly annoying noise from the ventilation in one of the restrooms upstairs. I was fine with it but light sleepers might want to talk to staff before booking.”
