We booked this 'apartment' as a nice place to round off our trip to Sri Lanka, payed a little more than we had throughout the rest of our stay. We found the place unclean uncomfortable and in a very disappointing state of repair. We were the first customers of the year, but there was a bottle of drink in the ice tray in the fridge. Also there is a habit for old folk to chew something which makes their mouth red, then they just spit on the ground, in this case the old lady of the house all over the sand of the beachside seating area. Now I completely understand that part of the attraction of being by the ocean is the sound of the waves crashing over the coral reef, which is brilliant if you could close the balcony doors at night. However, there is no aircon, the ceiling fans are very noisy thus making if impractical to use them during the night, so as the property is directly between the ocean and the main coastal road with its horn-crazy traffic throughout the night, sleep was almost impossible at nearly 30 deg. and exceptionally high humidity. We were literally shocked to find that the shower was unheated, ie cold. As for the wrap around balcony in one word "dangerous". The whole thing was insecure, if anyone happened to lean against it, they would almost certainly end up in the garden below with certain dire consequences. Around the corner some of the slats were actually unattached to the handrail and ended up sticking out following a heavy wind the first night. We were offered breakfast, but at 1200r each, more than we'd been paying for 4 of us. Fair to say that we brought most of these issues to the attention of the owners and they should be given the benefit of the doubt to rectify the faults, carry out a thorough deep clean, replace and install throw rugs and make this a nice place to stay…
Run by an enterprising offer, Sujee Villa offers a self-contained flat on the upper floor of the owner's house. It has a beach front, and a small garden with parking facilities. The villa has two bedrooms, a large bathroom, a sitting and dining area, and a wonderful wrap-around balcony. The hosts are exceptionally hospitable and gracious, and provide a wonderful local perspective to visitors. They provide a lovely breakfast, and the coffee is absolutely wonderful! Great value for money, and much, much better than staying in money-gouging motels and hotels further up the road in Unawatuna. Highly recommended!
