If you are into old, historic boutique hotels with a lot of dark public rooms filled with old world furniture and art, and spacious rooms decorated with period furniture, tchotchkes, and whimsy, then this place is for you. We loved the colorful garden entry, small breakfast room, private parking area and historic building. At first we didn't take to our room which was spacious and comfortable (small double bed, though) because of the fake fur pieces, but we concluded that it went with the overall ambiance. Our room was over the garden, overlooking the parking lot, but had many windows that let in light and was very quiet. The staff was so helpful and welcoming, anticipating our needs and questions. The town was quiet, except when busloads of tourists stopped for a few hours, had many restaurants. Santillana Del Mar is quaint, but some of the shops did not seem to open, so shopping was limited. We stayed 2 nights because we visited the caves nearby and that's about the right number of days.…
I absolutely love this inn. Built in the 17th century for royalty, it has been transformed beautifully into a lovely inn. I love the exposed structure; so amazing how they built this place back then! The room and bathroom are very spacious, well appointed, and comfortable. The windows block out all the noise. The patio and garden beckon visitors to hang out with a glass of gin and tonic (love the display of gins). In this small and quiet town, we wish we had another day to just relax in this inn. The reception staff speaks perfect English and is very helpful.
Stay in this hotel rather than in Santander based on a friends recommendation. Well, we like night life and the town have little to none. But reviewing the hotel, we got a fair size room, well decorated but the a/c had no capacity to get a nice sleep. Additionally, the room was very noisy, we could hear people talking at every time and very early morning and was uncomfortable. Recommend to stay in Santander and visit Santillana on a day trip.
Hotel Casa del Marques is a lovely luxury hotel in an historic 500 year old building very near the center of the old section of the town. (But if you are driving there you should call the hotel and get better directions than your GPS will take you if you just put in the address). It is a small hotel with 15 rooms. Our room was very comfortable with all modern conveniences (although it would have been nice to have Kleenex provided). The entire staff was very pleasant, informative and helpful. For a luxury hotel, the price was incredibly reasonable. I would strongly recommend Hotel Casa del Marques.
This is a hotel with lots of character. It is in the heart of Santillana Del Mar which is extremely busy for such a small little village. Tons of hotels and restaurants. Not sure where all the people are coming from. I wanted something unique and I got it. Ok, we did not get a king bed, its two twins side by side, but we had an amazing patio with a sofa and table and chairs. I sat out there and finished a book to chill out after a long drive. It was Monday and the village is pretty quiet that day. Most of the museums were closed. The staff is friendly and they have parking,.. a big deal in this place. I liked the atmosphere and would come again if I were ever in this part of the world again.
