A stay at this hacienda is a journey to another another side of Ecuador, and to another time. The hacienda is dripping with history--from the striking Incan walls of the dining room to the family history of the owners. The service is excellent and the food is outstanding. Most importantly, it is a beautiful, magical place with a character all...

We stayed for three nights in this historic hacienda, close to the mighty vulcano Cotopaxi. We never got better service and comfort than in St Agustin de Callo; we felt like Kings. We had more an appartment than a room; three fireplaces, two bedrooms! The staff was fabulous. Service was outstanding professional, yet closer to comfort than many other hotels....

The hacienda was incredible. The rooms were just breathtaking, the food was INCREDIBLE, and the service was above and beyond anything I expected. This place is filled with history, and it was a privilege to stay here. Beyond that, a friend had severe altitude sickness after visiting Cotopaxi during the day. The staff (Paula and others) went above and beyond...

For starters, there are two ways into the Hacienda. Don't take the one that goes through Cotapaxi Park as it is a rut filled dirt road and not conducive to driving. That is the only negative to this beautiful Hacienda. The restored rooms are spacious, warmed by fireplaces and really are special. Dinner was in a candle lit room, built...

We arrived late after a mudslide made our journey rather tortuous. Having dropped our bags we went to the dining room. Wow- it was just set for us, it had the walls of the inca building. Then with a dark wood table, lots of candles, stunning flowers. It was a magical once in a life time exhibition. The food was...

We stayed at Hacienda San Augustin de Callo on a visit to Cotopaxi. Just loved the stay there. We were a family of five and they gave us a three bedroom house on the premises. The house was so beautiful with elaborate murals on the walls. We were greeted by the manager and lamas. The kids just loved it. The...

We were greeted by a herd of llamas! And it got even better....there was a chapel built from Inca ruins and a dining room that was also Inca construction, with candles everywhere! Just beautiful! A fireplace in the bedroom and bathroom! Beautiful gardens and well located to visit the volcanoes. A truly unique experience!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Since the 15th century San Agustin de Callo has served as an Inca fortress and palace and Augustinian monastery and was also temporary home of the French Geodesic Mission (1742) whose scientific work helped change the shape of the planet. Other famous visitors include the brilliant German scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt and English mountain climber Edward Whymper. In 1912 the Hacienda was purchased by General Leonidas Plaza Gutierrez, leader of the liberal Revolution and two-time President of Ecuador. With only eleven rooms, it is one of the most romantic spots for honeymoons and other special occasions. San Agustin de Callo constitutes the only lived in museum of Inca Imperial and Spanish Colonial style. Surrounded by the smoke-blackened Inca walls of the dining room, one can marvel at the infinite precision of the stonemasonry, a monument to the unrivalled craftsmanship of the Incas, and admire the stunning view of Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world. The peaceful atmosphere and magical landscape combine to make San Agustin a sanctuary of inspiration for artists and lovers of nature and a restful haven for weary travelers ... more   less
