We stayed at Butiama for 5 nights after a week safari in Tanzania. Mafia Island is best reached by plane from Dar es Salaam (30 minute flight). We were met by people from Butiama at tiny Mafia Airport. Our stay was amazing! You pay quite some money, but if you can afford, it is definitely worth every cent! Food is...

We stayed here for a week at the end of a Tanzanian trip specifically to chill out after a hectic time at home and on holiday. The room was absolutely lovely although we had to ask for an extra fan as the nights were extremely hot. The breakfasts were really nice and you can get a cafetiere of coffee if...

We couldn't have picked a better spot of our honeymoon. We went in January, which proved to be hot and humid with a constant breeze (day and night) that was cooling and not a nuisance at all. The chalet was clean and tidy (with a safe to lock up your valuables, although it's not necessary - we left our things...

The hotel is ideally situated, close to where you see the whale sharks, so it is a very short boat ride to go see them. The sea water in front of the hotel wasn't the cleanest water, but I assumed it was due to the time of the year, and the whale sharks being around - they eat the plankton...

We had (after 2010) another perfect stay at the Butiama Beach this October - thanks to Maura & Moize (and, yes, the whale sharks, the snorkelling - and the delicious food). We were two families with three kids between 9 and 13. We will come again for sure. In short: If you travel to Tanzania, don't miss this wonderful place.

We stayed at Butiama Beach hotel in November for the Whale shark watching at the end of November. Upon check in we were asked for our food allergies or preferences and given a tour of the resort by Maura. The rooms are spacious and well thought out - the lounge area in the front with a hammock, table and chairs...

The Pros: amazing grounds; lovely bar area; fantastic pool; great excursions; fabulous food; friendly staff; close attention to aesthetic details. The Cons: rooms were extremely hot, with insufficient fans; no wifi except at reception area; service was often slow; not a great swimming beach. We had a lovely stay at Butiama, but might bring some extra fans with us next...

My wife and I spent our last night on Mafia Island at Butiama beach resort. We stayed in a luxurious bungalow that was both beautiful and clean. The staff closed the doors sprayed the room for mosquitoes and closed the mosquito nets around the bed while we were enjoying out spectacular four course included dinner. The highlight of our trip...

Moez, Maura & team really go out of their way to make your stay pleasant and enjoyable. Great setting, situated right on the beach in thatched bungalows under palms. Lovely big pool for children and adults alike. Great excursions, especially snorkel and picnic tours to remote islands. Whale shark trips are very special.
