This was by far the best B&B we have stayed at. Avondrust's friendly and competent team welcomed us and made us feel at home immediately. The rooms are spacious, neat and tidy. A delicious breakfast is served in die breakfast room. Perfect for couples who want to break away from the city life. I would recommend anyone to stay over...

The Avondrust is a historical bilding beautifully restored. They offer rooms in the main House and in extra buildings in the garden. As we booked relatively last minute we got a room far off the main building at the end of the garden and there it was pretty dark. Our Little Patio was more or less surrounded by the walls...

Dear Teeny Thank you for taking the time to write a review. As you say unfortunately no other rooms were available when you booked, please keep in mind that our property is 4000m2, that's why some of the rooms are far from the main building. Everywhere in the garden & by the pools are places to sit & relax. We...

A very attractive old building very close to all the attractions in the town but within its own grounds. The gardens are really beautiful and a real oasis of calm. Our room looked out onto the gardens and had a small deck outside with a table and chairs to sit in the shade and enjoy the calm. The room was...

Like living in the Victorian times for a weekend. Pure bliss. Wonderful hosts who really care. Stayed three nights and will do it again. Best for Capetonians looking for a quiet get away from our mad city. Must try some Karoo lamb. Spend some extra and stay in the Manor House. Thanks Guys!!!

What a BEAUTIFUL house…! Early 1900’s, Edwardian Colonial elegance and style, this house was built by someone who had imagination and a clear idea about what “gracious living” meant in his time – despite being in the middle of “nowhere". Graaf Reneirt is definitief a pretty little town – rated one of the top 5 places to visit in SA...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
In the heart of Graaff-Reinet lies Avondrust, an imposing Guest House and B&B. Built in 1911 it offers you 4000m2 of gracious living as its philosophy. History Of Avondrust Guest House Avondrust - A Home from Home in the Karoo Cradled in a loop of the Sundays River, the Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet is home to some 200 national monuments. Around every corner a piece of history is revealed to the visitor. And it is here, in the centre of town, that Merino sheep farmer and breeder, Jan Stephanus Minnaar, built his dream house during 1911. Avondrust ("evening rest") was to be his retirement home. He lived here with his wife, Maria Magdalena Smuts, "Ouma Smuts". After he passed away, his daughter, Cora Luckhoff inherited Avondrust. Cora did not want to live in the house and sold it to her brother, Eduard Smuts (Eddie) Minnaar. After his and his wife's death, Cyril Minnaar bought Avondrust from the estate. His grandfather was Jan Minnaar's brother. Graaff-Reinet Accommodation Two Luxury Suites in the Manor House, one with its own private lounge and veranda, the second is upstairs with its own balcony and Bay window overlooking the front garden and water fountain. A romantic Honeymoon Suite with a king size four poster bed and slipper bath. Five Deluxe Rooms, of which one is a lofted room in the Manor House with its own balcony that has a treetop view of the garden. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with private entrances leading out into the tranquil garden behind the impressive Edwardian Mansion. All rooms boast space, privacy and comfort plus the use of a large pool overlooking the mountains. Wake up to a full country breakfast, served with a crackling fire on the side to warm up your cold winter mornings. Avondrust is within walking distance from all shops, museums and restaurants. Accommodation is offered on a bed and breakfast basis. During the 1990's, the Van Hoffen Family converted the house into a guesthouse. It is still a home away from home for guests today with Nico Hattingh and Tess Erlank as the current owners. ... more   less
