5 years travelling, later living and working in South America but Amor Patrio remains the backpacker hostel against which all others are judged. The word legendary is banded about to such a degree that's it's become almost meaningless but Gert Altmann is truly a legend. The most respected jungle guide in the whole of the Amazon; this is the guy...

My friend and I stayed at the posada for 3 nights in November '13. Gert, the owner is extremely friendly and very helpful. Indeed, if it wasn't for him, we would have struggled to get a bus out of the city! The posada itself is directly opposite Plaza Bolivar, probably the nicest part of the city itself. It is well...

Stayed here one night, the posada was fantastically placed right on the historic square. Room was large & bed comfortable but there was no lock at all on the door - obviously been broken by previous tenants. Was a bit odd, had to tie it up overnight with a washing line otherwise the door would have overnight been open. Apart...

There are five rooms, each with a different cultural theme. All rooms and common areas open onto open courtyard. There is a nice “music” (living) room. It was a good...

The rooms are basic, no A/C but fan, but nicely decorated. They all have shared bath. There is also a kitchen available, so you can prepare your own food. The owner, Gert - a German - who lives in South America for more than 25 years, is very not only helpful in organizing tours, but also for other information (...

Posada Amor Patrio offers very nice rooms in a midrange price range. You won't find A/C or private bathrooms. BE AWARE: The hypocritical owner tries to press you into overpriced tours (salto angel, rio cuara).
