One of our favorite bed & breakfasts in Ireland was Marlinstown Court, Co Westmeath, Mullingar. The owners had lived in New York City several years and returned to Mullingar with their five-year old daughter and purchased the bed & breakfast. They were so enjoyable, the house was lovely, breakfast was great, and we really had a good time there. But what really made our stay special was watching their daughter step outside the back door before going to school and saying the pledge of allegiance to the American flag that was flying there; just like she had done while attending school in New York. That made our hearts burst with pride.

This was the first B&B we stayed at in Ireland. We had no idea what to expect or what would be expected of us. I mean, we were in someone's home. What is the polite thing to do? Hang out with our hosts and the other guests or stay in our room. Well, any anxiety we might have had was ridiculous. We received a warm welcome from Larry, he showed us our room and then retired to our hosts' living quarters. Barbara gave us some suggestions about where to have dinner and we chose a pub called Danny Byrnes on the main drag of Mullingar--our first outside-of-Dublin Irish pub. This was the right choice for us and a good beginning for our "research" on Irish pubs. Our room at Marlinstown Court was comfortable, clean, and quiet. We hardly knew there was anyone else staying there. The grounds are beautiful. Internet access was available downstairs. Breakfast was a full Irish--hearty and satisfying. Barbara graciously helped us get on the road to our next stop--Trim. I recommend Marlinstown Court to anyone traveling through Mullingar.

stayed just the one night when attending a charity function in Mullingar, Lovely host welcomed us & showed us to room which was in the house next door, & asked what time we would like breakfast next morning, lovely clean room but being on the main road you could hear quite a lot of road noise , I had requested a double room but it showed up as twin, I rang & was told that rooms had a double & single bed, well the one we had had two singles, but as we were only there for the one night it wasn't a big deal, breakfast next morning was excellent with a good variety of fruit , cereal ,brown soda bread & toast, I had the most delicious omelet I have ever tasted, overall a very pleasant stay with excellent hosts. Parking is available at the rear of the main house.

We stayed at the B&B for two nights as we were traveling from the UK for a family wedding. The facilities here are truly top notch and I would definitely stay here again. We were provided everything that you would expect from a 4 star hotel with the added benefit of the personal touch from Barbara and Larry. The rooms were spotlessly clean, spacious and with a walk in wardrobe I felt it was also fantastic value!

We were provided the full use of the kitchen, with complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits, fruit and bottled water - but the real benefit here was the outside patio area, where we could enjoy a cigarette at our leisure.

Both Larry and Barbara were very friendly and helpful and made us feel like we were with family whilst staying with them.

I have just returned from a second visit to Marlinstown. Not only is it the cleanest hotel/guest house I have ever stayed in but it is also has the most helpful and knowlegable host and hostess. Larry and Barbara greeted us warmly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Not only did Larry make a booking at a restaurant he also drove us there. Thank you so much

Spent two nights at this B&B while we were in town for a wedding at the hotel next door. The hosts were very helpful and super friendly. We had two rooms in the adjacent house which was quiet and parking right outside. Breakfast was home cooked by the hosts and nothing was to much for our fussy eaters. Beds were a little small but comfortable. When we were leaving the host came out to the car specifically say goodbye to the teenagers sitting in the back seat. A good indicator of someone who cared about their guests. Highly recommended.

We stayed at Marlinstown Court for two nights. The afternoon we arrived was the day of the All-Ireland Football final, and we wanted to be sure to watch. When we told our host, Larry Ginnell, what we wanted to do he immediately offered to take us into the town center to find the perfect pub for watching on a big screen TV. We passed several pubs as he went, with Larry commenting on each, until he spotted just the one he thought we would enjoy most, pointed out the nearby cab stand for the ride home, and dropped us off. We had a great afternoon "at the match", chatting with people next to us, and cheering for Mayo (maybe next year)! The following morning, Larry and Barbara asked us about the places we planned to see in the surrounding area. Larry brought out his spiral bound atlas and showed us the routes to Old Mellifont Abbey, Monasterboice, and the Battle of the Boyne site, then urged us to take his atlas for the day - much more manageable than our large fold-out map. On our last morning, Barbara printed out step by step directions from Marlinscourt to rental car return at Dublin Airport - she has written them out in precise terms and keeps them on the computer for guests. Very helpful and reassuring!
All this in addition to a spotless and very spacious room with a super comfortable bed, delicious breakfasts in the breakfast/sitting room - fresh baked brown bread , of course - with pretty china and place settings (several patterns and styles throughout the room). For all these reasons, we highly recommend Marlinstown Court!

Dear Susan and Rick, Thank you so much for your kind comments. It is our pleasure to help all our guests as much as possible (unfortunately we could not get Mayo to win for you). Glad the directions to the airport were of help to you and that you got home safe. I hope we will meet again some time

Haven't forgotten the experience. Great simple breakfast of choice. Individually catered.. Extremely clean.
Lovely Flowers in the garden.
Just out of town, far enough to be quite yet near enough to amenities and central town.

This is a terrific B&B and one of the best places to stay in Mullingar. Barbara and Larry are charming hosts and the rooms are comfortable, well equipped and absolutely spotlessly maintained. Barbara's breakfasts are delicious. This really is a lovely, friendly place to stay and rates are very reasonable.
