We booked this place early in the new year on the basis of favourable reviews. Even 2 days before we were to arrive we were contacted and they looked forward to our coming. However, on the day and at our arrival we were met by one the owners and were told they could not honour our booking. They claimed they had contacted us the day before(they had l later discovered - at 11.57 pm!) They further claimed that they had ceased listing on booking.com but that the site still kept it going. They said we could use another bnb in the town - at the same rate. After a long day of travel, we accepted this explanation rather too easily. All lies, according the owner of the other bnb. Gate Lodge frequently renege on commitments. And the alternative accommodation was more expensive. If I could give Gate Lodge no stars I would. AVOID THEM!…
After making reservations 2 months in advance and getting confirmation from Padraig, the owner, we arrived to have him say he never heard of us. Showed him the emails of correspondence with him and he was still puzzled. Had to drive 50 minutes for another accommodation. Oh yeah, he only accepts cash and he rarely responds to emails. Good luck.
Padraig was a charming and friendly host. He gave us lots of information and stories. He made our B+B experience so enjoyable. The food was excellent and the room was spacious and comfortable. I would certainly stay at the gate lodge again. Thank you for a memorable visit.
The title "Great B&B" does not adequately describe the reception we received at the Gate Lodge. Unfortunately 9 golfers had only one night to savor this Irish hospitality at its very best. Wonderful reception, friendliness, and a genuine interest in who we were and where we come from. Padraig and Margaret went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves and even provided lifts for us in to,and home from Portumna. A good night was followed by a wonderful breakfast. The Gate Lodge is at the entrance to Portumna Golf Club, which is one of the best in the country. Thanks Padraig & Margaret for everything and for sharing your lovely home with us.We will be back next year. JB
Stayed here with friends on our way to Connemara. The rooms were excellent - clean and well appointed. It was close to the golf club where we were all able to have a good dinner. Breakfast in the morning was great - a full Irish, piping hot! We were made very welcome and I would have no hesitation in recommending this B&B to everyone.
