During my endless tour around Ireland with work I stayed in the Shearwater Hotel and Spa for a couple of nights early March 2020. One thing that is good to know before you come is that there is plenty of parking in a sizeable basement car park with both stairs and a lift to all floors. The Reception and Front of House are very grand with an impressive staircase leading I assume to the brand new function suite which will be ideal for weddings etc. However whilst the front of house is indeed very grand and impressive and worthy of a four star hotel the back of house, as has been mentioned elsewhere is a totally different story. The rooms at least on my floor (2nd) were fairly tired looking with dated and tired furnishings. I guess from management responses to other posts that they are aware of this and are trying to gradually renovate rooms as and when. I hope though that they have taken an inventory of the rooms not yet refurbished as it will let them see that there are a number of issues that need fixing in the short term – cracked basins/wobbly light shades/worn chairs and desks etc etc plus only one double socket in a double room? That might have been fine years ago but come on some of us have to work and with a laptop and two phones to work with/charge up it’s a juggling act what you do first. My first room had no heater in it literally however a quick call to reception resolved the issue. I must say that the girl on reception plus the girl from housekeeping were both brilliant in quickly dealing with some minor issues that I had. It wasn’t any bother to them. I found the breakfast to be really well laid out and with a wide choice of both hot and cold fare it sets you up well for the day. With regards the restaurant the menu is a bit of a strange one – it’s kind of half restaurant half fine dining and whilst nice enough it could be modernized and simplified a bit. That said again the staff were great and attentive without being intrusive. I’d like to come back in a while once the management have completed their refurbishments as whilst this hotel isn’t quite living up to its potential I’m sure it will get there!

Stayed here with my family this week but wasn't overly impressed. I arrived to my room to find a cup containing cigarette butts at the door! The cleaner picked it up later but wasn't a great sight as you enter a non-smoking room.
The rooms could do with some TLC. Stains on the carpets and some of the doors are really marked. Heating fans make a terrible noise. I had to take the room card out in order to sleep but was then woken up at 3.15 am to a guy rooming the corridors calling out a ladies name 'lizzy'. Another friend that was staying on another floor and was also woken up by this guy. Security need to be more aware of the likes of this happening.
The pool was nice but had no lifeguard on duty, so I had to look after the kids myself.
The food was ok but chips and soup were cold when we got them. Kids menu was good although they were disappointed when they didn't get the traditional brownie that was offered. The chocolate cake that they were given was too rich and was not a brownie.
Staff are young and pleasant

Will I stay here again......No!

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. We have 2 security gaurds on duty at all times, however they have 5 floors to cover and it would not be possible for them to be present on every floor nor would it be possible to stop a guest leaving their own room at any given time and calling out to maybe a partner or family member. Our pool has high definition cameras which are linked to the leisure center reception and our life gaurds carry out a pool walk every 5 to 10 minutes. We do not have a life gaurd present at the poolside at all times as we feel children should be under their parents supervision as this is the industry norm. Kind Regards Barry Lynam General Manager

We stayed here on Saturday night. Check in was fast and professional. The bedroom was clean, could do with a update but very clean. The hotel has been recently updated and in regards to coronavirus this hotel has it under control. The staff are extremely friendly and all have PPE on, Sanititisers are pretty much everywhere and the furniture is frequently sanitised. I was definitely anxious about this stay due to current times but that definitely left when I got here. An absolute pleasure as always. 10/10 for staff, couldn't fault them in any way.

So here 1 night out of 2 not looking forward to spending another night.
First off there was a mixup with the rooms which we had called ahead to lRify yet where still left waiting 20 minites for our room keys,
Once in the room we found the A/C to be absolutely useless we called reception 5 times as all 3 rooms the family are in are over 25 degrees even ith the ac on apparently, the staff themselves where not very helpful.
After complaining 5 times we finally recieved some fams for the rooms which where dusty and crusty showong they had not been cleaned at all ie not very good with covid going on at the moment.
When we arrived we sanitised the rooms ourselves and with dettol wipes i personally done all sockets and switches and door handles, the dirt that was on he dettol wipes afterward was appaling.
The furniture in the room all has stains and/or damage even the matress on the bed has springs sticking out which let me tell you leave you in quite a bit of pain after sleeping on.
Any sockets for charging phones and what not are horribly placed and well out of reach, to top that off all aside from 3 sockets in ach room are micro uk plugs so standard plugs for ireland dont work at all, so 2 out of our 3 sockets where used up with the 2 fans per room,
The rooms have very poor lighting all round.
And the tv despite having a hdmi input is about 360p no inputs work hdmi or scart the channels that are on the tv are blurry and laggy which confused me to be honest but kept freezing.
Were spending tomorrow morning at the pool hopefully that does not make this stay any worse.
Absolutely shocking rooms not worth the money at all!!

The only positive is the resteraunt staff are nice cheery and very clean making atleast the dinner good.
However Still not good enough to warrant getting a room here, just book the resteraumt seperate.

Unfortunately this trip went from bad to worse. The hotel is in dire need of some TLC on the outside the paints is peeling away and some of the wooden doors have holes in them which has been filled with white polyfill. At check in the lady at reception told us the football would be available to watch in the bar so once we checked in we went down only to find all the screens in the bar turned off as they said there satellite was down. We were also told there was a band playing music in the bar that evening only for us to return to the bar later in the evening to find a man with a guitar and microphone singing in the bar, the music wasn’t to everyone’s like but either where the smoke alarms that keep ringing throughout the hotel deafing everyone in the bar. The three course dinner included in our package was in the nicest way possible completely inedible. The rump steak had a gelatinous fat running through it and not the type you could just cut out. The vegetables where also covered in horrible a blend of spices that did not belong on them. The chicken and mushrooms vol au vent sauce was sickening that it completely destroyed the dish. (We sent every course back with having bearly touched it we also brought this to managements attention).
In the end we ended up returning to our room and woke up for breakfast the next morning starving from the night before we got ready and went down, the food available was well not as fresh as I would expect it to be for a four star hotel. We also had treatments booked for the Sunday and upon entering the spa I wanted to check if there was any earlier appointment but the girl in the spa was quite rude and very dismissive so we ended up cancelling the treatments we had booked. Our room was very basic but was possibly the best part of the hotel, it was spacious and clean.I really wanted to like this hotel and the restaurant staff and leisure centre staff and management were lovely to us it’s just very unfortunate that this four star hotel is becoming very run down, all the staff are very young but are a credit to the hotel.

Dear CELLENH24 Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. Our Hotel is only recently under new management and is undergoing a revamp as we speak however the exterior side of things will have to wait for a better climate which I am sure you can understand is hard come by. Our staff are most definitely a credit to the hotel we pride ourselves on good customer service. I will take all your other comments on board. I have addressed your food issues with our head chef who assures me this was a once off as our food is usually of a very high standard, my apologies for this. I also have spoken to the staff on duty in the spa on the day which you have mentioned and unfortunately our spa was completely booked out so no earlier appointments would have been available I again can only give my apologies if this was not related to you in a courteous manner. Kind Regards Barry Lynam General Manager

Having booked a family room and double room for two nights at this hotel I had to write a review. This hotel has so much potential as the rooms and common areas are very nice and clearly new but the service is beyond unacceptable for a hotel to the point I would never return. Rooms are not serviced or stocked with towels or toilets rolls until you stay for 3 nights. Despite ringing down serval times for an item we gave up waiting.

When we arrived we should of had the warning signs. The reception desk was empty and 15 minutes later someone eventually arrived to check us in. Not what you would expect from a large hotel.

The worst experience was the service for diner on a very quiet night in the restaurant with 4 other tables in. Simply no service as staff chatting at the bar, which I have no issue with until there’s no service for drinks, ordering food or clearing the table. We eventually got to order pudding and when they arrived one desert for my little boy was missing. On the third attempt of requesting the desert after everyone else had finished I went to the bar to ask for a final time if the pudding was coming. The pudding was the brought out which was a chocolate brownie and ice cream. My little boy took one mouthful of the chocolate brownie snd screamed as the brownie was so unbelievably hot and had burnt the inside of his mouth. The fact they served this pudding off the kids menu to a child with no warning that it was so hot was beyond anything I have ever experienced in at hotel ever. Never have I been so angry with the lack of consideration.

To sun this hotel up this needs a very experienced manager to come in a lead this hotel with some experience in how to turn around a team on customer experience and attention to detail. I really hope they can achieve this but my goodness will it take some doing. The worst €1,000 spent on a weekend after room costs, a spa booking and food and drink.

We stayed here for three nights with our three boys. I can not say enough about this hotel, it was perfect for a family break. Our younger ones keep asking when are we going back! The family suite had two huge bedrooms, yes it’s a little dated but it had loads of space and was super clean. Big powerful shower, plenty of hot water and a seperate bath, loads of big fluffy towels which were changed daily. It was like having a little apartment the kids lived the room.
We ended up eating in the bar the three nights as food was so tasty. Breakfast was v good well organised , my boys loved the selection of pastry’s and fruit etc.
The pool was v good, an hour slot was grand as the pool was v quiet so plenty of space. Supermarkets nearby for bits and pieces snacks etc.
Reception area was v nice to relax in.
Will definitely be returning, the staff were so helpful and welcoming and the kids enjoyed the kids club 👍👍

Very disappointed if I'm honest from the time we arrived the service was shocking. I made a booking over the phone 3 weeks ago, telling staff member I had a pigsback voucher. She asked me to bring it printed, and asked for card details to hold the room that no money be taken of the card. So when I arrived i was told they wernt sure if they could rediem my voucher as I was to reserve the room myself online (which I was never told on the phone) the member of staff I delt with then told me I'd also booked another room online(which I didnt) she contradicted me a number of time which was very embarrassing. She told me that I was the only person that could of done it as my card details where on the booking. Found it weird that the date I rang and booked the room with my voucher was the day the online booking was made with my card details. I didnt make the online booking and I want to know who did. I found the staff really rude, elaine was very unhelpful I felt as if I had done something wrong as she made such a big deal out of the booking. I then get to the room to ring and ask for a mini fridge that I never got. I then get into the shower to have it stone cold. The next morning I go to use to jacuzzi and it's out of order. My experience was shocking if I'm honest I wouldnt recommend anyone to stay here. Was really looking forward to my stay as I got the voucher as a present.

Dear emmalF140DT Thank you for taking the time to post us your review. As explained by myself to you on the night you checked in with us your booking was made online via our website, there is no possible way that a member of our reservations team could make the type of booking that you presented with from our side, it is only possible to make that type of booking via our website which we do not have booking access to. Regarding the pigsback voucher you have mentioned, this voucher did not coincide with the booking that you made, also this voucher was not in your own name which may have caused some of the confusion. Both Elaine and myself took the time to amend the booking through pigsback and get you checked in as quickly as possible. Elaine and all the front office team here at the Shearwater are very professional and have excellent customer service skills and as I myself was present for your check in I can say that your remarks about rude and unhelpful staff are both untrue and unfounded. As storm Denis was in full swing last weekend we like so many others experienced a power outage which knocked off our boilers for some time resulting in the loss of hot water which I can only apologise for. Kind Regards Barry Lynam General Manager

We booked this hotel for a one night stay over phone.

First Impression a phonecall, simple, professional an very helpful personel. Very easy to book a stay, and answered every question I had in a nice and professionall manner.

Getting in hotel and seeing reception area we were stunned, big chandelier that 5 star hotels would be ashamed of.
We came to reception to notify them that we are bit early for check in, and that we are gonna have lunch while they set our room.
After lovely lunch, where service was just ok, had a bit of feeling that some of the staff didnt want to be there at all, we went back to reception.

A lovely lady told us that our room is not ready yet but she has a room ready straight away, so that was nice touch. Went to the room and the room was ok, nice comfy, not bad, not excellent eaither but what you pay is what you get, isnt it?!
(We were on a Getaway to Galway offer)

Pool at 6pm, prebooked, lovely pool, bot many people there because of Covid restriction, so we felt really safe, and that was a reason we booked this hotel, picture of pool online is amazing, not far from real view.

After swimming pool it was time for dinner at 7.30 ( also prebooked ).

An my oh my dinner was excellente, we were served by a young waiter called Luke. And Luke you are great!

Nice treatment, chatty but still very polite and professional, from bringing a drinks to our table, setting up a table, picking up starters and bringing mains, and allways checking if all is ok, and if we need anything. I hope that managers will see this and give him something to show him appreciation, because this guy knows his job, he deserved applause and big thank you.
These are hard times for hospitality workers and we need to make sure that they know how everyone appreciates their hard work.
Only bit that I would maybe chance is that question that we always ask : " Is everything ok?"
Guest knows that is ok, but you guys need to know that you are better then ok, much more like excellent. So rather ask " are you enjoying everything" like that you will show your guest that you are certain in what you do and what you serve.

All in all excellent experience and we will be back here.

Luke, you exceeded our expectations!

Thank you.

Very nice looking hotel on the inside. All staff were pleasant and polite. This hotel has adapted to the new COVID 19 measures quite fast as we visited mid july. Seemed to be constant cleaning in progress in all areas from what we could see.

Very poor communication when it came to booking a pool time slot, was only told of the need to do this when i had rang the spa to confirm something completely different. The pool area was nice and clean, but there was swimming lessons on??? very uncomfortable situation to be in when trying to enjoy a weekend away when 3/4 of the pool is taken over by lessons.

Had booked our trip a month (or more) in advance for 3 nights, but was then informed weeks later that the hotel couldn't honor a 3 night stay as it wasn't opening on Mondays for the month of July.

Breakfast was a buffet style, but it was served to your from behind a counter, which was pretty nice.
Restaurant food was lovely, the creamy pasta dish was to die for.
Reception was clean and the receptionists were very helpful and didn't keep you waiting long to be looked after.

Dear MrWorldwide-Critics Thank you for taking the time to write us your review We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay with us.. I see your stay was in mid July, we can only apologize for small discrepancies in things like pool times we only re opened on June 29th so we were still finding our feet with the new normal. I will touch base with the leisure centre manager in regards to lessons in the pool when guests are using it. We are sorry that we could not honor the 3 nights you had booked but due to covid 19 it wasn't viable at the time for us to open Mondays we are again sorry for that, we do hope that you will return to us again and if you do please contact me directly on gm@shearwater.com and I will be sure to look after you.
