Neither an hotel or a professional guest house, Desmond, Melanie and their son, Gordon, run Glenlohane as an extremely private house with an air of friendly informality so unique to Irish Country House Bed and Breakfasts. Certainly not considered a 'room for the night' type of B&B, there are no public signs at the roadside to draw the attention of casual visitors. Guests are welcomed on a pre-arranged basis and know where they are going by the detailed directions in this web site. There are no public and private quarters as in a professional place and guests may use facilities of the entire house as if staying with friends. There are family dogs and a cat in the background and animals play a large part of life at Glenlohane. Less than a quarter of a mile away, and still on the farm, is a Self Catering Cottage that can be rented on a weekly basis. Apart from farm animals, there are also horses, ponies, fantail pigeons and bantam hens in the traditional stable yard.Whether it be at Glenlohane for B&B or Glenlohane Cottage for self catering, staying is for the discerning visitor who wishes to learn more about Ireland's history and culture through personal contact with the owners. One is also well positioned for sightseeing throughout the Scenic Southwest of the country.

Returning to Glenlohane after a 21-year absence, we stayed at the cottage for the first time. We were by the cottage and as always charmed by the countryside. We will return again, soon! Chris & Karen Cotter

Glenlohane is a lovely country getaway for those wanting a quiet country retreat in a totally rural setting. The house is an authentic manor style home and our bedroom was huge. It was the large room displayed on their website. We had access and use of most of the main floor rooms. There are very nice gardens behind the house. We were the first guests in the house for over two years due to Covid. It is a family run operation, with Desmond and Melanie (both in their 80s) and their son and daughter-in-law Gordon and Angela. All of them were very friendly and accommodating and interesting to talk to regarding local history and sights throughout Ireland. Desmond and Melanie had been very involved in the local “hunt” and “horse” society, but no longer have horses. They are involved in animal rescue efforts and have a rescue cat and two dogs and we enjoyed interacting with the animals. Breakfasts were very good, available at the times we requested and the hosts provided us with the freedom to come and go for our touring and golf efforts. The house is a few miles north of Kanturk, which proved a good location for our touring and golfing during the 5 days with them. They provided several suggestions for dining in Kanturk and we really enjoyed The Vintage restaurant. Another suggestion was Bobs restaurant, which we never got to visit but Bobs caters the local Kanturk Golf Club and our lunch at the golf club was very nice so we suspect the main Bobs restaurant would also be nice. Just be warned that Glenlohane does not provide the usual resort amenities (pool, spa, tennis courts, night life) and is not for anyone who needs to remain continuously connected to the outside world. There is no TV and the WiFi connection to the internet only worked well from one main floor room rather than the 2nd floor bedrooms. David Voechting and Melanie Wood

I stayed with my brother, his wife and my wife. We had a fabulous time. We were treated to lodging that was like a piece of art. It seemed as if every painting, picture or antique was steeped in a family tradition with an exquisite story. The breakfasts were fabulous. I was fortunate to spend some time with each of Desmond, Melanie and Gordon. Each of these times was special in its own way but my favorite was spending the afternoon with Desmond and Gordon while Desmond gave me the blow by blow history of the kanturk battle of 1641 with Oliver Cromwell. They were also a great resource for suggestions on things to do in Ireland generally! In summary, they were all very hospitalable. My family had the experience of white glove service. I feel I could go back for a month.

Situated in quiet countryside, in a part of north Cork that is undeservedly less well appreciated than the west, south and east, is the charming, welcoming and comfortable Pink Cottage at Glenlohane. The charm and welcome are echoes of its owners Desmond and Melanie Sharp Bolster. This cottage, whose roots and some of whose walls date to the seventeenth century combines the comforts of today with the tranquil setting of the past. Well heated, well insulated, well furnished, it's bookshelves well stocked, it copes with all weathers and is a home from home. A great variety of attractive and important heritage sites are within easy reach and quiet walks are close to hand. A delightful place to spend a relaxing holiday. And a place to which we hope to return.

Spent 2 weeks in the Pink Cottage in July (two adults and two teenagers). Lovely quaint old cottage in a very quiet area, with all mod cons supplied. Comfortable beds complete with pure countryside silence at nighttime ensured we all returned home well rested and totally chilled out. Good base for sightseeing. Very friendly hosts. Nearby Kanturk has all you need.

We are just back from a wonderful week in the self-catering Cottage at Glenlohane. This truly is a hidden gem of a house with the most beautiful garden and views. When you first enter the cottage, using the wonderful huge old door key, you immediately feel at home. The Cottage is a wonderfully secluded getaway, set in the middle of gently rolling fields of barley and ancient Oak trees. It has bags of romance, character and history and also offers every modern convenience, including Netflix, which was a hit with our teenage son. Everything your heart desires is provided, including a bunch of hand picked daisies from the garden to decorate the dining table, a basket of logs for an open fire in the sitting room, fluffy towels in the bathrooms and a range of great books and magazines to pore over. Desmond even called down after our first night to see if we had settled in and to deliver the Sunday paper. This was a lovely gesture which made us feel genuinely welcome and perfectly at home. For groceries, a well stocked supermarket, Duhallow Seafood, a fruit and veg market stall and a range of other shops are all just five minutes away in nearby Kanturk. There are also a number of restaurants in Kanturk offering both eat-in and takeaway options. The Cottage is really well located for touring Cork and Kerry. We did some sight seeing - visiting Kinsale and the Old Head of Kinsale, Killarney and the Gap of Dunloe/ the Ring of Kerry and closer to home we spent a lovely afternoon walking in Duhallow Woods. There are so many wonderful local places to visit, you will spoiled for choice! Luckily, the weather was beautiful for the duration of our stay and we ate all our meals outside, both while at the Cottage and whilst away on day trips. The Pink Cottage at Glenlohane is a unique and beautiful destination and Desmond, Melanie and their son Gordon are extremely gracious hosts. We have arrived home completely refreshed and have already decided to return to the Cottage next year!

One of the most beautiful homes we have stayed in, Glenlohane was incredibly comfortable and set in a beautiful part of the country. Our hosts were the most delightful and kind family who happily and willingly advised on the best local hikes and sights to visit – the house is very conveniently located for sightseeing the Southwest of Ireland. We took several day trips to visit Kanturk Castle, Blarney Castle, Mallow House and always came home to a delicious supper and a warm home. We could not recommend this house enough, it has so much historic interest and proved to be the best way to visit Ireland, very unique indeed!

Our family of four spent four days in the main house of this wonderful property. Our hosts Demond and Melanie Sharp-Bolster were exemplary and their hospitality went way above and far beyond to make our stay unforgettable. Glenlohane is extremely well located, which made it easy for us to visit local attractions and other stately homes. We were also directed to excellent local hikes and excursions and, naturally, the great local pubs ! Glenlohane is a fantastic place to stay ... one feels so much at home .... highly recommended !!

Desmond, Melanie and their son Gordon run the estate as a extremely private house. Glenlohane was built in the 1740’s and has been in Desmond’s family ever since. It is a quintessential Irish county home. Guests are welcomed on a pre-arranged basis. The guests may use the faculties of the private house as if staying with friends. Easy day trips to both coasts with beautiful landscapes. Glenlohane was truly the perfect Irish experience. The location was the perfect home for exploring the South of Ireland. We stayed stayed at the beautifully decorated main house. There is also a self catering cottage. Our bedroom we stayed in was cozy with all the comforts of home. The house is immaculate and a pleasure to stay there. We recommend Glenlohane without reservation.
