My Wife and I spent a week here during our 10 day car trip from Seattle. It was peaceful and relaxing. Earlier we had stayed in Liberia (Las Espuelas) and Monteverde (Vista Verde). At Naralit had a corner room (#23) which was large, private and has good views. It had 2 beds, and enough space for my folding bike and trailer. Wifi worked better than at the other 2 places. Breakfast was not provided. The A/C worked well and was quieter than at the more upscale Las Espuelas. We had a refrigerator and flat screen TV, with about 5 English channels (football, news etc). Sadly, no PBS. The on-demand shower took some practice but worked fine. The maids Rosie and Juanita were hard working (as is usual for women in CAm), efficient and always cheerful. I could joke with then in Spanish. The hotel is family run. It has lots of parking. The owner Febrin was always quick to help out. For example, he insisted on helping me change out a flat tire on our small Suzuki. He provided us with an extra fan and outlet strip. He helped carry our luggage. Some days he was out with the maids hanging up washing or repairing a vacuum cleaner. We spoke Spanish, but he is OK with English. Normal price for 2 persons was $36/night plus tax but we ended up having nights 6 and 7 free. Much better value than at our other 2 hotels (listed above). Tilaran, at 600 m (2000 ft) is quite scenic and is a good base for exploring the coast and Lago Arenal, both of which we did. It has some low-priced supermarkets (Pali was our favorite- excellent papayas, watermelon, bananas etc) plus some local Tica restaurants. (Ask Febrin). The central park and church make for a pleasant afternoon hang-out. Before staying here, we drove through Tilaran en route to Monteverde. A mistake. The 30 km of gravel was brutally steep and rough. Never again. (Better to go to Monteverde via Las Juntas, which is the way we returned). From Tilaran, it is easy to reach the Panamericana at Las Canas, on a paved road. I had some fun bicycle rides in the Tilaran region, although it is very steep. Great views of the Nicoya Peninsula and of the Arenal region. We would happily return there.
