Visit was great location, staff was courteous, room was clean. The restaurant was convenient, menus were simple, but the food was nutritious and tasty. The place is a bit rustic, but part of the charm. I do like the way the rooms are set up; in two lines facing each other with a central common space porch .

Our group was pleased overall with our visit to the Portal Peak Lodge. If you want to visit the Chiricahua Mountains for birding, there are not very many places to stay, and this lodge is well located. The facilities are quite spartan, but comfortable, clean and adequate. We were especially impressed by the staff, who made every effort to be...

If you want to visit or hike the Chiricahua mountains in southeast AZ, this is an excellent choice. Book early as there are 16 rooms. They have nice, comfortable, and quiet rooms. They serve meals and the food is good. They even have a selection of beer and wine. I stayed for 2 nights, went hiking on the 2nd day,...

We are out in the sticks (sorry, US readers - miles from anywhere) and we have this quite special place. The town is relatively isolated, several miles from anywhere, on a flat plain with amazing mountains nearby. And with a very small population, why would you not want to stay here? The cabins are basic and comfortable - probably the...

Not much in Portal, but this was comfortable and close to birding and National Monument. Room had two double beds, table and 2 chairs. Microwave in room. No Tv. Hummingbird feeders in front of the rooms. Quiet. Clean. Restaurant on site. Pretty good food. Reserve early, they fill up fast.

This room had plenty of space and two beds for my friend and I. The room looked clean and beds were comfortable. The only downside was a rather large cockroach in the tub. I only saw the one, but that's the reason for a 3 rating. Breakfast Sunday morning was very good. Lots of character in this small settlement. Beautiful...

Stopped here today for lunch. Great variety of menu items so each of the four of us had different meals. Save room for dessert. We loved visiting with other guests. We will certainly return for another scenic tour.

Traveling the back roads of Arizona, we came across the Portal Peak Lodge. Made reservations and told that they would be closed for the week of Xmas.. No problem.. they put the key under the mat and would take care of us when we checked out.. The night of arrival it was a little hard finding the lodge as it...

I didn't stay at the lodge as I went backpacking up Cave Creek Canyon. My colleague did stay the night and was very happy with the simple rooms- 'all you need'. The breakfast was simply superb! Very unexpected for this remote part of the world and the local herpetologist joined us, sharing all his local knowledge of where to find...
