We've spent a night in San Martin, in Juan Carlos' cabanas. Juan Carlos is very very nice, and his cabanas are a pleasant place to stay in. For 750 pesos per night (w/o breakfast) you get a large room, with fully equipped kitchen. We had a nice dinner there... The yard is also well maintained, with grass and beatiful flowers spread around.
Comfortable and inexpensive cabins. Fully equipped kitchen. Friendly and helpful owners. Make sure to visit the two miradors (viewpoints) on either side of the lake. Of the two, Mirador Bandurrias was the nicest walk and best view of the lake and mountains; simply unforgettable. We took a picnic breakfast (a hot drink is a must, as it can get cold pretty quickly up there), and sat looking at the awe-inspiring scenery, and watching the birds of prey soar overhead. After the mirador you can walk on through a local Mapuche settlement, and on to La Islita, with its beautiful stone beach and views of the little island that give the place its name. There are plenty of restaurants in the town, but if you can cook steak, we recommend getting some of the local beef. We made pan-seared steak, with roasted vegetables, and red wine and onion gravy. Much cheaper than dining out, and good fun too.…
We didnt plan on staying here but as the hostal we were staying at charged 170 AP for double for b&b and this apartment was 150 AP (on special offer) we moved over and stayed here for 3 nights. Slightly dated but comfortable, we had a bed room, living room with television and tiny kitchen and bathroom. The weather was cold so we were pleased to have something more than just a room to come back to. The hostal had an awful breakfast so pleased we could make our own here. The ancient oven worked well and after some fiddling with the controls made it work and had some nice cosy suppers in our warm kitchen. Payments was in cash, and although the owner did not speak English she was very obliging in finding a coffee maker for us when we asked for one. Rooms were cleaned daily and towels replaced. This area is very residential and about 4 blocks to the town centre. Within easy walking distance of the bus stop. There are lots of apart hotels to choose from and ended up choosing this one because of cost. The gardens with roses were well looked after as was the whole complex. Although there was a large fridge/freezer, the kitchen could have done with a few more basics. Noise between the bedrooms was quite loud, so probably not too well insulated. Would certainly stay again. If you wanted something a bit more upmarket it would cost more and quite frankly we were pleased with what we got for the price.…
