#10 of 128 hotels in Cape Town Central
Alta Bay, located in Higgovale, the most up-market suburb of the City Bowl, is set high on the slopes of Table Mountain, with beautiful views over Table Bay and the City, yet only 3 km away from most of Cape Town's attractions including the Waterfront, beaches and within walking distance (1 km) of Kloof Street with its many restaurants and coffee shops. Surrounded by a lush native garden, Alta Bay combines understated luxury and urban chic with a laid-back and retreat atmosphere. Alta Bay, previously a 5-star boutique hotel has 5 years ago (Oct 2011) been converted into a 4-star self-catering Guest House with 3 large luxury units. Each unit has a separate entrance, a fully equipped kitchen (or kitchenette), a private outside terrace and offers all the 5-star facilities. This Tuscan house is built on separate levels with a great sense of space and light throughout and is designed in a contemporary style with bespoke furniture handcrafted locally. The Loft (70 m²) and the Bay Suite (42 m²) offer spectacular views of the sea and city while the Garden Room (28 m²) has the benefit of the shaded lush garden. The Loft has a bedroom on the mezzanine floor, a bathroom with bath & shower and a sleeper couch which can accommodate a 3rd adult or 2 children. On arrival, there will be cereals, coffee, tea, bottled water and milk in your room. For guests who want to have breakfast outside, there is a large variety of restaurants and snack bars within walking distance (1 km). We suggest our guests to have their own transport during their stay in Cape Town. Alta Bay is located high on the slopes of Table Mountain. Having their own transport car will give them the flexibility to explore the region. Kloof Street with its' many restaurants is only 1 km away, which is an easy walk downhill. However, to come back is much harder. If driving left is a problem, taxis (including Uber) are easily available.

Our standard room in the bottom garden has a very jungle-like feel. You can even hear the owls and the different birds in the trees. No sea or city views from our garden room as you have green all around you. Yet, you are within walking distance of restaurants. From the pool area, you have views of Devils Peak which is nice when having sundowners. Uber is easily accessible from this guest house and anywhere else in the city. It’s convenient that they have a guest bathroom available to have a shower before late flights. We want to thank the entire staff for a wonderful time. To summarize, our stay was comfortable from start to finish and will live long in the memory. Thank you. We can't wait to visit again!

I had an amazing and relaxing stay at Stephan and Beulah's place. The studio is immaculate and very comfortable with everything you need. Refreshing jump in little private pool in the morning is so unique let alone the nature and well-maintained garden which is like an oasis of peace. The hosts are very helpful and friendly and I will definitely come back on my next visit to Cape Town.

We spent the weekend here, and loved it. Alta Bay is family owned and run, and the owners and their daughter welcomed us warmly. They were very knowledgeable about the area, and are fluent in several languages. We stayed in the Bay Suite, which has a private deck above some lemon trees, affording city, sea and mountain views – the perfect place for morning coffee. The bed, bathroom, furnishings, filter coffee, WiFi etc. were all first class. The garden is beautifully maintained and has an African forest/jungle feel. Water is managed in an environmentally conscious way, and is re-used to water the garden. I would happily recommend this establishment to couples, families with children of school going age and older, business and solo travelers.

Alta Bay Guest House is a real gem. The rooms, built on the slopes of Table Mountain, are surrounded by beautiful big trees and flowering forest plants. There are numerous hidden seating areas around the cascading garden, connected by wooden stairs. There is also a charming little swimming pool. The rooms are well equipped, luxurious and tastefully decorated. While the guest house is close to the Cape Town city centre and beaches, it is completely tranquil and the perfect place to relax. The hosts are warm and caring. They are passionate about the environment, recycling carefully and using water sparingly. We could not have asked for a better place to spend a long weekend.
