Hello April, Driving to the lodge is not dangerous as long as you drive during day light, we strongly recommend not to drive after dark, considering potholes and cattle on the roads and lorry transit in the mountain passes.
If you do decide to drive please stick religiously to the speed limits and make sure the spare tyre in your rental is present and fully inflated. If you get stopped by traffic police you may have to pay steep fines(bribes) before they let you go.
Please be aware that at the lodge you have to pay a daily parking fee of ZAR 185 and ZAR 80 gate escort fee for each time you leave and enter with the vehicle.
Also if you drive please make sure you have a working GPS, if you choose to use google maps on your mobile please make sure you have roaming Data or downloaded the maps for the entire journey also you need the coordinates for the Moditlo Estate front gate, please do not use Vuyani Lodge as the destination point as you cannot drive the roads google will sent you on, self drive guest usually take 6-7 hours to complete the journey.
You can find car rental companies at Johanneburg airport when you exit the international arrivals gate go towards the info desk in front of you, to your left you will see a flight of stairs going down which will lead you to the car rentals. Avis is present at the JNB airport and Hoedspruit if you simply wish to drop the car there, rather than take it to the lodge.
From experience car rental is a false economy of scale, you are much better off taking the transfer service the lodge offers (5-6 hours) or a local flight, unless you wish to drive for several hours after a long international flight.
