Because it was pretty much fully booked we could only stay one night at Gibela, but we found it to be a very good place to stay in Durban. I agree, the owner is a bit cool, especially in the e-mail-conversation ahead of our stay (no greetings, set phrases or punctuation). After our arrival, however, he was very helpful. As...

Sorry for the disappointment of having to have a short stay at Gibela, but leaving it to make bookings less than 18 hours before arrival (and it being a weekend) you not always gonna hit the jackpot. Nevertheless it sounds like you enjoyed your stay and appreciated the cleanliness and organization in general. We hope we can accommodate you for...

I loved this "travelers lodge". It's clean and very cute. And it not about party party party. The staff was more than helpful with pointers about Durban. I would highly recommend this place if you are in your own and passing through Durban

You got that spot on - definitely not a party stop (suppose that's why you choose us). By the sounds of it you spent a few days in Durban - which it deserves. Definitely not a one night stop over destination. For our multiple night guests we do offer endless information to fill their day with activities and fill their...

Elmar was initially cool and business like. However he proved to be very helpful and thoughtful once he warmed up. the Wifi not functioning during my 5 day stay was very disappointing and inconvenient

Morning Craig As a business person who was attending a business conference, I would have thought you would have appreciated the business approach. As business people are not our regular clientele, Gibela obviously don't fit the business glove. As a first time reviewer on TA I take it you didn't have the opportunity to read previous Gibela reviews (and responses)...

All the C's - Clean, Convenient, Caring, Central to amenities and city, and one big M - very well managed! I decided to try Gibela as an alternative to the usual B&B or hotel and was very pleasantly surprised.

Greetings Gavin Many thanx for the truly "wow" review. Suppose those in the hospitality industry have an appreciative understanding of the not so obvious behind the scenes nuts and bolts that make an accommodation establishment stand out a notch above the rest. As you know not always easy to be a Jack of all trades. to keep cool and remain...

Solo traveler, stayed three nights. Easy 5 minute walk to many restaurants on Florida Road including the lovely Vintage Indian restaurant. Delicious and healthy hot breakfast. Owner was very helpful and even provided me with water and fruit when I had to leave extra early for my tours. The hostel was very clean and you can tell care was taken...

Greetings Siyabonga (thank-you) for your review. Durban definitely is not a one night stop and requires minimum 2 days to explore and experience what she has to offer. The same counts for Gibela. If you read fellow traveller reviews of Gibela its the "multi night stays" that get to really appreciate what we offer and "absorb" all the extras. (not...

This was a lovely place to stay! Far more than I expected from a backpackers. I have stayed at guesthouses that have catered less well to my needs. Spotless, peaceful, stylish, friendly, organised, all the hot water you could want at any time of day or night, a delicious, healthy breakfast... A special thank you to Elmar, the proprieter, for...

Great place, good location (right by the racecourse) and very friendly staff. Secure off-street parking, included breakfast and a swimming pool. On the expensive side for a backpackers, but worth it for all but the most shoe-string traveller.

Beautiful courtyard and pool area to hang around, nice rooms, clean amenities, great and helpful host. Try out Jooo's Steakhouse across the street! Location is excellent 2min to supermarket, restaurant, laundry, bar. 15min by foot to the stadium, 20 to the beach!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
TOP CHOICE - Lonely Planet 2012 "If this hostel (a tastefully converted 1950's Tuscan home) were a B&B, it would be described as 'boutique'. One of Durban's best hostels, it has sparkling surfaces and rooms neat enough to pass an army major's inspection. It even provides a continental breakfast- to be enjoyed in an attractive indoor-outdoor dining area." Gibela is conveniently located in the safe, residential area of Morningside and within walking distance to the center of Durban’s entertainment life, Florida Road, where there are restaurants, cocktail bars, clubs and coffee shops galore. ... more   less
