(1) Booked into this hotel on a tour from the USA, I have found the front desk staff have inadequate English to respond to reasonable requests. Just now I tried to exchange money (there was an illuminated sign giving the exchange rates) and all they responded was to look at my two $20 bills with puzzlement and put me on the phone with somebody who did speak decent English, who then said they could not change money and that the desk staff could direct me to another hotel where I could change money. Well, the desk staff on duty could not manage to direct me anywhere. So back on the phone the manager finally says there there is a $50 minimum. It was crazy. First they won't change any money; then there is a minimum. I'll wait until tomorrow and find a bank. (2) The beds are hard. What they call a mattress, I call just a box spring. For research, I viewed a room at a hotel across the street, which had the same mattress. A Chinese-American on the sponsoring organization's staff tells us that these are standard Chinese mattresses. So our expectations of a 4 star hotel as promised in our tour documents have been misled by whatever the standards are used to assign these four stars. Our very first night in China between travel connections was at a JW Marriott that had American quality matttresses. So we expected that the next place would be similarly equipped and are sorely disappointed. That is, physically sore every morning. (3) The breakfasts included in the tour package are OK. Plenty of it, both Chinese and basic Western foods. Although the coffee seems to be made by someone who never had the real thing to compare it to. (4) I would not stay here again and if not locked in by a week long conference at university, I would move to a better place.…
I stayed at this hotel in August 2011 for one night, booking their top room (executive room). The hotel was, overall, ok, with some areas for improvement. CHECK IN Check-in was slow, even though there was only one person checking out in front of me. However, there were 5 attendants behind the desks, and they all carefully avoided eye contact, and there was a line stretched across the space in front of the desk so that it appeared that only one check-in station was available. Overall, it took me 15 minutes to check in, which is way too slow, and I was told initially that my room was not available because it had not been made up yet, even though I checked in at midday. On a positive note, at least the check-in ladies were pleasant, although the process clearly was not efficient. ROOM The room I was given was average, no big complaints about it. It had a flat-screen TV (but no Western channels), and a quick check revealed that the mattress and memory foam cover on top of it were both new, which was good. The sheets were also of good quality cotton, and sleep quality was good, with very little noise except for the air conditioning unit.. The room carpet, as was the case throughout the hotel, was stained and dusty and badly needed replacing; in one place the burn outline of a cigarette could clearly be seen. The bathroom was ok, the only complaints being stained grouting around the bathtub, which suggests that this property needs a refurb in this area. The rooms come with fast broadband connection, which is welcome. Ethernet cables are supplied in-room, although the one I had was clearly a relic from the 1990s. There was also a mini fridge, but nothing in it. The room service on my floor was attentive and helped me out when I asked them questions. GENERAL AREA One of the good points about this hotel is that it is located right next to the old Italian area of town - it is literally one minute away, just round the block. It is also close to the canal (one block away) which has been regenerated and has a very pleasant embankment for pedestrians. WOULD I STAY AT THIS HOTEL AGAIN? In a word, yes. It's ok for business, and costs a lot less than the main Western brands that can also be found in Tianjin. So, value for money was good here.…
