EarthSong Lodge - Denali's Natural Retreat

Certificate of Excellence
An excellent alternative to the commercial hotel experience, operated by longtime locals who homesteaded in the immediate area. Located above treeline on open tundra with sweeping mountain views, far away from the noise and crowds at the park entrance. 12 log cabins with modern amenities available in five different sizes, affording comfortable accommodations and privacy. Daily morning sled dog kennel tours allow guests to meet the dogs that take winter visitors on expeditions into the park in the snowy season. Evening slide presentations offered by staff naturalist. Coffeehouse open in mornings offering light breakfast items and baked goods, along with full espresso bar and best coffee in the area.

My wife and I stayed here for a week in August. The location, staff, and dogs made it a great base for our time exploring Denali.

The cafe provides breakfasts and boxed lunches for day trips, and also provides coffee, teas, and other beverages. A ski hut also has 24/7 coffee, t

The thing I like the most about this lodge is it’s location. It’s down a quiet dark road hitch is great if you want to see the aurora without venturing too far from your room. It’s also an easy driving distance to Denali. Another plus point is that the cabins are not attached t

Response from karinjon, Owner at EarthSong Lodge - Denali's Natural Retreat

Thanks Tracey for your review. Our location is great, and our cabins are not the Hilton or Marriott. We do have a bit more than just the necessities, and the extras like the coffeehouse, sled dog kennels, and slide shows should help make up for what's lacking. But the main reason for my response is to clarify things a bit about moose and hunting. Everyone is definitely entitled to an opinion on hunting, and I certainly respect your views. I myself do not hunt, for a number of reasons. But moose are not rare in Alaska. Not even close. And when an area in the state has a moose population depressed, the State will close it to hunting or place restrictions. Moose are just a bit rare in the Lower 48. Prior to building the lodge I homesteaded in the area, and know other homesteaders, who live on minimal income and most if not all of their meat is from their yearly hunted moose. Hunting is strong in custom and tradition in not only Alaska, but every state in the US. It's just up here in Interior Alaska near Denali NP, there are no deer to hunt. Caribou population is low, so our area is closed to hunting that species. It's basically just moose. I know none of my staff would ever intentionally disturb you talking about things like this, and likely it was truly meant to educate. One of the best things about travel and vacations is exposure to other customs and traditions, even if they are not for you! It's easy to forget that while Alaska is part of the US, many things are different up here. We're more akin to residents of rural areas than people from the suburbs or cities...I know, being from suburban NJ myself. What EarthSong does not have are mounted heads and trophies around the property, like many hotels in Alaska...even the airports! I imagine you saw many moose during your visit. I was riding my mountain bike through Kincaid Park near the Anchorage Airport two days ago and saw moose three times on an hour ride! In Anchorage's largest city, with the jets flying overhead. So at least be satisfied to know that Alaska is full of moose.

Henry's Café is the new addition at the entrance (with very limited offer of coffee, breakfast rolls, and sandwiches). A group of small cabins connected by board walks has parking at either extreme and a little seating area by each cabin. Ours had 2 narrow bedrooms (each with Q b

We are still having happy thoughts of this place months later. You can visit their sled dogs every morning. Each cabin has a distinctive look in and out and ours was very comfortable for three adults. Friendly managers are also the mushers and are happy to tell you stories. You a

We are camping people but sometimes we like to have a roof over our heads! This was an absolutely lovely lodge to stay at. Do not expect the regular comforts of a chain hotel because this lodge caters more to the adventure /outdoorsy traveler. The cabins were small but very co

We are travelling by rental car. Some rental car companies negate their insurance when the vehicle leaves asphalt or concrete road ways and is driven onto gravel. With that said, how would you describe the roadway from highway to your property, as-well-as the roadway on your property?
The highway was torn out when I went there but the rental car companies usually specify which highways they dont want you on. The roads to Earthsong from Anchorage and Fairbanks were not on the list. Road construction in Alaska in the summer is expected.
