#16 of 124 Speciality lodging in San Jose
Costa Rica Backpackers is the first hostel in the country. We are independent and locally run, and as such ou will get the personal touch not found in big chain hostels. We opened our doors in 2001, and have been the number one meeting spot in the capital ever since. Come and hang out with travelers from all over the world! Swaying palms, smooth tunes, free breakfast, kitchen facilities, WiFi, swinging hammocks, that's the Costa Rica Backpackers way! Think global, stay local

A nice hostel with a swimming pool which is a surprise! There is a restaurant and a bar, a kitchen, where you can prepare your meal and a tv room here. We book a room via booking.com the day before and when we arrive at 4 pm it's not ready! We have to wait half an hour until they clean it, we even have to push the reception because they are so slow. However, they are very fast to take the money for the room. The room isn't big or nice, there is a big bed, a shelf, a fan and a window overlooking the corridor. We have a shared bathroom which looks nice. The price is 28$/night that is 15.880 CRC.. They serve simple and small breakfast. We decide to have dinner here and it’s a mistake because it’s awful. We order Thai green curry and Caribbean chicken which is ready-made pot dish, no coconut milk, overcooked vegetables and chicken isn’t fresh. The Internet is slow and unstable.

Very poor conditions. Be careful with the initial deal, they might try to charge you extra for air conditioning after you already book. Noisy place, lot of manager’s friends coming at night to smoke pot and drink. Its an old house with thin walls so you can hear all the noise which is almost always present. Its a surf based place so they wake up at 4 to prepare for surfing, so you can rest only between 22-4 am. Problems with toilets, not properly working. Got here by mi

A bit of a hoof from the Alajuela stop & main bus station, though handier if connecting with Cartago/Irazu/Orosi. Been in worse than SJ, but it's a bland concrete overpriced sprawl. Whoever named this place must've been numbed by blanditis, but shed the sweaty backpack, sign in (eventually - processing seems airportesque here) and mosey out back to an Alice in Oz Oasis (if forming a supergroup, you can come up with a catchier name for the band). Sincerely, though you'll find more wonders of rainforest through your Costa Rican adventures, this is a welcome start. Lounge by or in the pool with a cold Pilsner, fiendishly scheme your onward itinerary, blether with fellow dudes with alternative rageous plans. Some staff lacking interactive skills, but it was quite busy, so not much time for banter anyway. Fairly good info for excursions & moving on. Dorms & bathrooms a bit shabby, but a stormy June afternoon made things unavoidably messy. Handy friendly Peruvian diner just up the road for a change of scene.

I had a good time here, but my room was right next to the pool, so people were hanging out outside the door talking. Not all the time, but quite often at night. You can buy food here, but I found same dish half price out on the street. They offer tours, but shop around in the city, if you've got the time. You might find the same tours much cheaper. This place is also a bit noisy, located near a train line and a busy street (Avenida 2), but it's easy to go everywhere from here. All in all recommended.

I arrived at SJO airport, got easily with an Uber to the hostel and stayed for one night. My girlfriend arrived in the following night and continued our travel the next day. The hostel is very nice. Especially the inner garden including the pool, lots of places like mattresses for chilling, the bar/restaurant and more. The rooms were totally fine and I liked the small curtains in front of every bed in the dorms. The bathrooms were basic, but cleaned. The staff was very helpful regarding our future travel. They gave us a lot of tips and informations for the buses for example. The city is about 10 minutes walk away and the Grand Terminal for the long-distance buses is ca. 20 minutes by walk. A very nice service for „free“ from the hostel is the possible storing of your suitcases during sour further travels. They just want another reservation after your storing time and then you can leave your stuff in a separate room in the basement till you finished your stay.
