Hotel Don Carlos is somewhere between a regular (Small) hotel and a boutique hotel. It's located not far from the main tourist and shopping area of San Jose.

I have stayed here many times and am always treated with a smile and kindness. The many years of this hotel can be seen in the authentic art throughout the meandering common areas. It is so nice just to sit and linger.

Sorry I didn't answer sooner. We didn't see any noteworthy attractions nearby, but found the parks, streets, shops and markets nearby safe to walk to. We did get out about 10 in the morning, and felt no qualms about being out. The hotel is in the business district, so there always a lot of people around. Our driver from the airport recommended being watchful when we used our cell phones in the event someone came by and tried to grab the phone, but we didn't encounter any thieves.
