2021 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
Anamaya is a luxury boutique hotel and yoga retreat center in the beautiful beach town of Montezuma, Costa Rica. We have the best view of any hotel in the area, and are right next door to famous Montezuma Falls, which is a 5 minute walk from our property. The hotel is decorated in a very artistic, Bohemian, yet luxurious style that creates a very exotic feel.

I’ve been really unimpressed with the owner of Anamaya. This week, the group of women who all paid FULL PRICE for the yoga retreat, were exposed to non stop in and out people from wherever, and the owner did not require anyone to wear masks, and worse, did not protect the retreats privacy, peacefulness, or safety. He was quite pushy about wearing masks to the women who had booked the yoga retreat, however. He “comped” the yoga classes but honestly, it really didn’t cut it for me and I felt the need to share my experience here. To make it worse, he then started putting bottom of the barrel specials on the internet - forcing the yoga retreat guests to subsidize his high profit business. We all felt really taken advantage of. Almost all of our yoga classes were interrupted in some way by noisy guests. This was supposed to be an all adult property, but there were screaming children. The worst part of it was his lack of protection towards the female guests. There was a super rude man sitting behind the all female yoga class. He was asked to move. He then later that day, cornered the yoga teacher and was wildly rude to her - aggressive and rude. To make it worse, all of the staff were incredibly over worked. They are amazing and so dedicated, but honestly, it felt like watching slave labor. Non stop. 16 hour days for them. I can’t say I would return here given this. I tried to book massages twice and his spa coordinator forgot to book them altogether. I don’t recommend this place at this point, unless this owner changes this policy. I will not be back.

Response from Joseph Mikrut, Owner at Anamaya Resort & Retreat Center
Responded 16 Feb 2021
I am very sorry you experienced some challenges or disappointments during your time at Anamaya. I always welcome feedback, and would like to clarify a few things and be sure that these issues don't come up in the future. Just so everyone knows, in light of the current economic situation in the world, with much less international travel, we have needed to temporarily open to hotel guests and also open our restaurant to the public. At this time, it's true we can't offer as intimate of a space for retreats as we would like and as we have for many years, yet we do our best to hold a peaceful space. We have decided to incorporate some new rules regarding allowing kids to be hotel and restaurant guests during retreats to help ensure a tranquil space. In regard to a rude man watching the yoga class, I didn't personally experience this person, but if I had, I certainly would have asked him to leave. It is important to me that our female guests feel safe. I have recently placed more signs at the yoga deck asking for silence and privacy during class. We follow Costa Rica's policy about requesting masks to be worn by all the guests in indoor common spaces. This guideline is conveyed to each guest equally as a gentle request. We have been experimenting with our hotel rates to make sure it's comparable with what's in the area and we offer specials on our retreat prices occasionally as well. We have had very little to no profit for the last 12 months, but we have stayed above water and kept our staff employed. We are working hard and adjusting to having hotel and restaurant guests, but our staff shifts are 8 hrs/day, not more. I will ensure that our spa coordinator remembers to book massage appointments. Despite this changing world, we will continue to provide the best experience possible and we celebrate that most all of our guests absolutely love it here and usually extend their stay longer than planned.

The beauty, sounds , smells, tastes, and inner peace I experienced during our week there have sustained me through these crazy times of COVID. The service and commitment to excellence was the icing on the cake to the resort itself. Every morning, waking up to the sounds of the jungle, the incredible sunrises, the joy and bliss of it all....caused endorphin rushes of pure gratitude. The kinds of people that do a retreat such as this were truly amazing as well. Lovely people from all over the world. As we went through our week, we grew closer as friends. We got to tour see each cabin close up. Whichever you choose , you will feel like this is the happiest place on earth. If you leave the resort at all, make sure you swim in the waterfall. We waited til our last day...Do not miss this experience. The peaceful yoga every morning and evening perfected this experience. If you are reading this, you must go one day :)

My boyfriend and I were staying a a property nearby and lucky for us, Anamaya was open for non-guests to dine at (a Covid-19 accommodation). We ate there every day we were in Montezuma. As a vegan, I was able to order a different meal each day, which doesn't happen super often. Not only the food was delicious, but the service was consistent and the ocean view was the best I've experiences in Costa Rica!

My stay and Anamaya Resort was excellent. The resort was beautiful, and the staff and food were amazing. My jungle cabina was perfect, I loved being surrounded by lush vegitation and wildlife. The yoga, activities, and spa treatments were also amazing. I have nothing but great things to say about Anamaya, and I will definitely be going back.

This was such a special experience. It far exceeded my expectataions. The yoga guides Kelly and Ted exude love and passion throughout their every contribution and then some. The treatments, Lomi Lomi four hands and Ashiatsu massage, are the best I've ever experienced. Don't miss the cacao ceremony and chakra workshops! And sunset at the beach was very special. Can't wait to visit Anamaya again! Pura Vida.
