Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

In the pictures this hotel appears nice. In person, not so much. We visit CR every year and have stayed in various hotels, resorts & AirBNBs so we feel we have a well rounded experience in CR and can be objective. This hotel has no one on premise to contact after 10 pm until 8 am if something goes wrong. We woke up to no running water on July 6th & had a tour planned that morning. We were told that there was an issue with the motor that runs the water system. It is also very loud. We were facing the pool on the 3rd floor and the bar area is quite loud until about 11pm. Even with the doors closed and curtains pulled we could hear the loud singing and music. This hotel is more of a party hotel than a relaxing stay. Lots of mosquitos in the restaurant area. It is CR but we've not experienced the mosquito issues at other places we've stayed. The free breakfast is 2 small pancakes and some hard fruit, or the traditional breakfast are the choices. Drinks at the bar are expensive and liquor is watered down. Employees for the most part are very nice. Manger Lisa Hammer is not customer centric though. We complained about the water situation and she offered no credit or even comps on dinner or drinks for the inconvenience. Jaco has changed quite a bit and this hotel is off the main strip which was nice but you definitely don't want to be walking at night to get to the center of Jaco. As a family man I would not bring my family to Jaco again. There are much better options for families.

Great spot to stay right on my beach! Perfect surf shot right outside your door. We had a great time at the South Beach Hotel! The entire staff from the front desk to the servers & bartenders were super friendly & very helpful. We enjoyed dinner & drinks at the bar while watching the sunset & chatting with the bartenders. My husband loved the whole fried snapper & you have to try their homemade hot sauce, we wished we could bring some home with us…it was SO good. Everyone spoke great English. The rooms were clean & spacious. We will definitely stay there again next time we visit Jaco. We felt super safe at this location, it’s much more chill than downtown Jaco.

This amazing beach front hotel with accommodating staff makes vacation so enjoyable. The receptionists were so warm and welcoming when we checked in and always super helpful. We always felt like they were family. We looked forward to their included breakfast every morning with great coffee! The pool was the best part of our holiday. The grounds are always being cleaned and groomed. Overall we highly recommend this well kept secret hotel on the beach.

Our group of 5 adult friends & family stayed here last week and we absolutely loved it. It combines the small family or boutique hotel feel with the conveniences and services of a larger resort. We loved being right on the sand, and being further south enough to have a less crowded beach, complete with loungers under the trees. We walked up the beach every day (5-30 minutes depending) to hit some of the beach bars and restaurants, and always ended up back at our own beautiful beach bar for sunset drinks. We took taxis at night to bars in town-$3 USD. Rooms are spacious and were cleaned daily with towels folded like swans. We appreciated the toiletries provided in large pumps so we never ran out. Having included breakfast on site was always a relaxing start to the day. Someone was always in the front office for questions, including scheduling a doctor to come administer Covid tests for us on a Sunday ($60 I think). The security guards were always present on both the road side and the beach side, keeping everything very safe, and graciously letting us back in when we stayed out really late haha. Would definitely return!

Our family of 5, 2 grandparents coming from France and our dog had a fabulous time at the Hotel South Beach. The location is amazing, right on the beach. The owners and the staff are extremely friendly, always willing to make your stay fantastic. The bar right next to the beach offers awesome views of the ocean, great food and great drinks. It was our second stay there and we will definitely come back! We enjoyed it so much that we extended our stay. for two more days.

I guess this place is perfectly FINE. Relatively comfortable and clean and friendly. No one thing was terrible — and no one thing was awesome. Overall, it just felt at least a decade outdated and not like somewhere I’d want to go back to. Old, creaky, musty, dark, with cobwebs. But maybe I’m just used to fancier. “Just OK” is what comes do mind to sum it up. It’s definitely “walkable” to the town center. But it’s a 15 minute walk that’s sweltering during the day and a little creepy at night. The taxis are cheap so it’s not an issue — just keep in mind it’s not a “walk out your door and you’re there” place. When we got here, we just had two towels in our room — just slightly too small for our bodies. Called for more. Got 2 beach towels and 2 extra towels. After room service came the next day, we realized they DO have face and floor towels. Who knew. Shouldn’t have to ask for the basics. The pool view is nice in the sense you can always open your patio doors and walk straight to it. Almost impossible to close those curtains so people can’t see in, though. And I can’t imagine if there were children, because we could definitely hear the bar area late into the night. The internet is awful in the room. Had to take my laptop elsewhere to get anything done. But I have to work while I travel. The AC works well, but took us awhile to figure out and the room was sweltering and musty when we first got there. We came home a little after 11pm one night and the gate was locked and no one had told us during check-in how to get in. Understandably we were a little freaked out and were fiddling with the gate for at least 10 minutes before a security guard came to let us in. Still no idea how that all works. Only one mirror in the room, and that’s in the bathroom. We’re two female friends traveling together… And the bathroom mirror is often fogged up, and not even full length. So how do we do our makeup or get dressed? No conditioner in the bathroom for girls’ hair. I know it’s not as common in Europe and Latin America as in USA, but makes my hair impossible to detangle. Other hotels in CR we stayed in had it. Breakfast is fine. Tasteless eggs and rice and beans — or pancakes and fruit. Pick one. Lastly, these bright green paper bracelets they make you wear for breakfast… why? We give you our room number anyway. It’s not only ugly, but makes you stand out as a tourist in town, which is just uncomfortable.

I love this hotel !!! Excellent room and very friendly staff. I've stayed here twice and both times I got a room that opens onto the pool area. You are less than 10 steps away from the beach with the most beautiful sunsets you can imagine! Breakfast is included but we ate dinner at the hotel restaurant as well. The food is superb !!! I will definitely be staying here again and again and again!!!

Very nice and clean room with a 2 minute walk to the beach. Amazing surfing (they offer rentals) and super friendly staff. If you have a chance, try and have a conversation with Josh! Super friendly guy who has lots of local connections and got us great deals on the best local experiences and provided information as to where to go for a good time. Whatever you need, Josh is the plug. Pura Vida 👊

The manager Ms. Hammer is a saint and deserves a raise!!! As a rookie traveler I made several ridiculous mistakes. First I was trying to change the dates on my reservation at this beautiful hotel and accidentally canceled a nonrefundable reservation. I rebooked the reservation immediately with the new dates hoping that they would waive the first one. Then I got to the airport without realizing that my passport had expired four weeks prior. I had just used it to go to Washington State and was busy dealing with all the Covid related issues. Epic mistakes on my part! Then I thought the hotel charged me for both reservations. It was Expedia not the hotel. Right now I am waiting for the Hotel and Expedia to negotiate an appropriate payment on my part. Expedia wants me to pay full fee for both reservations after they already said I didn’t have to. This is NOT the hotels fault. So now I am waiting for Expedia to call Ms. Hammer to decide what is appropriate in regards to payment. The manager Ms. Hammer has been very very very patient with me and I am eternally grateful for her patience. Go to Hotel South Beach! And be careful with virtual chat on Expedia.
