My wife and I wanted to explore La Amistad International Park - one of the less-"discovered" places in Costa Rica, located in a pretty remote area, close to the border with Panama. We stayed at Hospedaje Cerro Pittier, based on a recommendation from a friend. The guesthouse is run by Olivio and Yami, a couple that has lived in the area for their entire lives, so they were very familiar with the trails in La Amistad. They also provided comfortable accommodations, with rustic cabins and home-cooked meals. All the food came from their farm and was prepared on a wood-fire stove. They even made made their own cheese from the milk they got from their cows. The food was some of the best we've had in Costa Rica (we've been living in the country for over a year). Yami's Gallo Pinto is probably the best I've tried. In addition, Olivio and Yami were very warm and provided good conversation during mealtimes, which included breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As for La Amistad itself: the park is absolutely beautiful. However, we visited during the rainy season, which limited how far we could travel on the trails. Still, we were able to hike on several trails and see wildlife, including white-faced capuchin monkeys, and toucans (which were also seen at the guesthouse). Hopedaje Cerro Pittier is literally at the end of the road right before the park, so the location can't be beat. We're looking forward to returning in the dry season to see more of La Amistad and staying at Hospedaje Cerro Pittier again.
