We stayed at Banana Azul for two nights in early August 2013 during our honeymoon trip to CR. What a beautiful place! We stayed in the howler room and this was an excellent choice. The room is beautiful with a great deck, ocean views and ocean sounds. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Food was delicious and bartenders made...

I totally recommend Banana Azul to anyone! It is clean, all staff is welcoming and friendly throughout the whole stay, the small bar and restaurant makes it easy to stay in for lunch and dinner instead of going elsewhere - plus the food is fantastic! The beach is 40 steps from the lobby - how perfect! Lounge chairs, the thatched...

We loved our almost week long stay at the Banana Azul. The hotel is beautiful and open air. Each room has an outdoor patio complete with hammocks and chairs. The rooms are really simple, clean, and chic. The beds were awesome and the showers were great! We loved the convenience of this place, right on the beach with great palm...

Loved every minute except Mosquitos in the treehouse! But could still put up with them for everything else! Door was terrific, animals were great made the place feel like home. I could easily stay here again!

As soon as we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and hospitality. My daughter, and friend and I stayed in the apartment which was clean, airy and very comfortable. The staff at this hotel feel like they are one big happy family and they all have friendly pets (which meant I didn't miss my Golden Retriever and cat despite being...

We had the best time at Banana Azul! We stayed in one of the Ocean View rooms at the beginning of July and it was great! From the minute we arrived, the staff was SO nice and friendly! We especially found the staff at the bar (Franklin and Mary Anne) as well as the grounds keepers to be extremely friendly...

Banana azul is amazing! We stayed in the sloth room and it was great! My husband and I stayed there for the last night of our honeymoon, we were bummed we had only booked it for one night! Clean rooms, good prices for everything you get, beautiful setting, right by the beach, delicious breakfast included, they supply sunscreen for the...

Coming from Naples, FL, a rather over-the-top resort community, we were looking for something quiet and primitive. Actually it was less primitive than we had imagined, but it definitely was quiet - things generally shut down by 10:00 pm. We loved the beach with nary a soul on it except on Sundays. Yes, there are dogs on the beach, but...

If you want to know what this place is like, their website is spot on. The location is a little north of town, but there are plenty of ways to get there. They rent bikes. The room rates are very reasonable for teh quality of stay. The breakfasts are great. Bring your own Lizano Salsa. The beach is right out...

My husband and I stayed three nights in The Apartment during our Costa Rican honeymoon! Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of fourteen beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans, and free wireless internet. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Gecko Trail Adventures tour company is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions. ... more   less
