Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Anyone who thinks this is a luxury hotel, super nice, tidy and close to ings animals, should not stay here. But for those who like to be close to animals and do not care so much that there is wildlife right on the knot, this is a hotel to choose. Perfect for everything. Very helpful owners and friendly. Can warmly recommend this place and around the corner there is a wonderful restaurant (Bananas) where you can have lunch, dinner and breakfast. I have nothing to complain about, but did not expect a luxury hotel either. Definitely worth staying. However, they no longer serve breakfast, but there is everything you need close by.

We stayed at Magellan Hotel and loved every moment. Had we not made other plans to travel to the other side of Costa Rica we would have stayed longer. So much to explore and do at Puerto Limon. There was a group of six of us total. The owner and her son were so hospitable.

would have given 5 stars except for the lack of signage out on Rt 34. We went through Cahuita and back tracked on the beach road making it a little tricky to find. That as the only thing that wasn't excellent. Clean, quiet rooms, wonderful deck and pool. Air conditioning worked like a champ. We were wonderfully surprised that we could watch the Super Bowl in our room broadcast in English...a definite plus! Breakfast was fresh each morning with delicious fruit and a selection of entrees. Owner (Sunny) and her family were kind and helpfull hosts. The location is outside of the village...maybe 1/2 mile but it makes everything close enough but it remains quiet enough to believe you're miles away. Nice wildlife on site with aracaris in the trees, sloths out front and agoutis roaming in the yard each day. Very clse to both Playa Negro and Playa Grande as well as all the resturants in the village. This will definitely be our base if ever in Cahuita again.

Lovely time at Magellen. Wonderful relaxing stay and just a short drive into Cahuita. Welcoming owner, cool pool and time to switch off. Great breakfast too! Loved seeing the baby sloth in the garden.

I left my car in the parking zone and when I came back it was hard damaged along the back. The Administrator said to me that he will take care of it, 3 days later he dissappeard and one of the hotel's employee lied to me saying that he doesn't work there anymore. So, I sent an email to the manager and owner of this hotel and his answer was unbelievable for me: "based on our "policies" we need a notification from the Court"; even when there is specific law and lots of jurisprudence about the responsibility he has as the owner of a public parking for private use. He wants me to invest time (I live 300 km from Cahuita's court, where I should go and declare) and money to obligate him to be responsible in life. If the owner and the administrator are like that, I wouldn't expect nothing good from this place. Try any other place, but skip this one, just skip a trouble on your vacations.

We are sorry that your car was damaged during your vacation but we must fallow our insurance and hotel polices. All claims must go through the proper channels. You are asking us to pay for the damages that another car did to your car. This car was not the property of the hotels, it was a clients or a service truck. We helped look for the car that hit your car and did not find it. We physically looked at all the vehicles that were in the parking lot that day and did not find one that had visible signs it had been in a wreak. We drove to see one of the cars that was off property to check for damages. We even helped you take pictures of those vehicles for your INS claims and for the police statement. We are doing our due diligence, and I even offered for you to speak with our lawyers, to which you refused. I can understand that living far way makes this process difficult, we are here waiting for you to come through with the proper procedures according to INS and the court system. Thank you for understanding we want to work with you through this process.

We stayed in the end room farthest away - I believe this is this room in this photo. What a delightful surprise upon our arrival. We're always looking for small places like this one. We visited approximately 5 years ago but I just found Terry Newton's Magellan Inn business card. I had assured her I would leave a note on Trip Advisor but then lost the card! Finally, I am making my promise come true. We enjoyed this gem in the wild. Walking the dirt roads and discovering little eateries with good food and good company. Every morning we looked forward to our "just perfect" breakfast served on the outside veranda. Given the opportunity to come back, I would stay here again in a heartbeat. The bed was really comfortable and the room very clean. The grounds were so lush and private and Terry was a great hostess. This is on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica South of Limon. We also visited the Sloth Sanctuary nearby. It was very interesting. In 2017, my husband finally found a stuffed toy sloth as part of my birthday gifts. That depicts the impact this place created our hearts. The date was 2016 not 2018 as I was forced to choose. I would definitely refer it to all my friends and family.

As good as we were expecting from positive reviews: great breakfast, comfortable room with plenty of bathroom extras, superb location, decent sized pool for small boutique hotel with just six rooms. We loved the friendly and well behaved house dogs and Buffalo the fat cat. Would have been five stars had owner responded more positively to a couple of issues during our stay, & bothered to say goodbye as we left.

We loved the location away from town where you could hear the waves and jungle sounds. Beautiful grounds , refreshing pool and amazing staff. The rooms were perfect and always cleaned, my wife enjoyed the organic body products provided in the bathrooms. Bed was comfortable and the ceiling fan and air conditioner were helpful during a couple of hot nights. We walked to town almost everyday, taxis were only 2500 colones each way when we used them, the area is very safe, locals were friendly and patient with our very limited Spanish. The hotel is very close to the beach and some very good restaurants, Sunny was always helpful and provided tips and information whenever we required. We really enjoyed the breakfasts as well.

We stayed at the Magellan for 5 nights. Some of the reviews seemed a bit mixed so we weren't sure what to expect but I'm so glad we picked this place. To respond to some of the other comments: - the rooms are renovated ... no, they're not 100% brand spanking new, but all the things that matter (bathroom fittings, tiles in the shower, amazingly comfy beds, aircon) have been done and it's a comfy place to stay. In fact I can't remember the last time I got over 8 hours sleep per night for 5 nights in a row - it's a boutique hotel ... if you want a big 5 star resort this isn't the place for you, but to be fair, it doesn't advertise itself as such. If you want somewhere quiet to relax where you can take a dip in the pool and then have a glass of wine on your terrace, you'll love it - the breakfast choices are great and cooked to order and delicious - yes, you'll hear dogs. This isn't unique to Magellan. If you don't like dogs, to be honest, don't come to Cahuita! - there really is a sloth in the garden. - it's a half hour walk out of town. In the day, this is a flat, easy stroll (we didn't have a car with us). After dark, take a taxi. It can be a bit quiet ... but that's why you're staying there. We really enjoyed our stay here and having looked around I think this is by far the best option in town. Sunny is a friendly host who lives with her family on the premises. To make it even better, it would be great if there was a restaurant on the premises (but I understand completely this may not be a viable option). Failing this maybe just having the lobby area open into the evening so guests can socialise with each other over a drink would also be great and maybe something that wouldn't intrude too much on family life. Thanks for a great stay.
