Booked last minute for a 2 night stay in San Jose. It looked okay on the website but when we got there we were nervous about checking in. After driving for 5 hours we were exhausted and decided to make the best of it. It does provide good basic accommodations and breakfast. But it backs onto a very busy highway and difficult to find at night. Google maps sent us in circles for at least 30 minutes as it is tucked into the back of a residential street. The owners are kind and helpful but you get what you pay for. Limited parking so you may have to park on the street. There is a full time security guard at the entrance to the neighborhood and it never felt unsafe.
First, there was no airport shuttle. The owners are not around, they are in their house next door. They keep the lights off in the hotel. They were unhelpful and unfriendly. The pool was too dirty to swim. There is no parking. Our room was great but nothing else about this experience was great. It was not worth the money.
Our family of 6 stayed for one night on way to airport. We found it very adequate; welcomed at check-in by Anna Marie. Room was very adequate with 2 rooms and a bathroom. It was quiet, clean, safe and had dining closeby and a nice little grocery store where we stopped. Anna Marie recommended both. Individually-cooked breakfast next morning of eggs, sausage, toast, fruit, juice and coffee. Very good. Anna Marie's husband (didn't get name) checked us out and was very friendly and said he hoped we'd return to our new Costa Rican home. They had a TripAdvisor sticker on their window. Mine are all gone but I would have definitely given them one if they didn't have one. A nice find which met our needs.
I can't begin to describe how horrible my experience was. First there is NO shuttle to and from the airport! The owner berated me for speaking spanish. My bed had ants in it, mice running all over the courtyard which is fine if they stay outside but the windows do not have any screens on them to keep critters out. I needing only to stay one night before my tour picked me up thank goodness. I was to stay there again (prearranged) on my way back to the states but when I arrived the fron doors were locked and no one answered my knocks or calls. I had to walk in the pouring rain to find another hotel. Just the worst!!!
Here's why you should stay elsewhere: when we checked in after dark, there were very few lights on anywhere and hard to see where our room was outside. Once in our room, there were literally 2 dim bulbs that barely lit the room. 3 EXPOSED empty sockets in the ceiling fan light and plugged-in bedside table! When I asked the front desk if I could please have a lightbulb, I was told there was light in my room and what was the problem. I said I could easily be electrocuted reaching for the lamp in an unfamiliar room. Begrudgingly, instead of just giving me a bulb, the elder proprietor marched down to my room with me and proceeded to scold me for having the a/c turned on and the door open. The room was musty, I'd just gotten there. Is this how you greet guests?? Harrassment and challenges about wanting lightbulbs?! My husband demanded bulbs, and we learned they took them from our trip leaders room! She went back to her room to find her bedside lamps which had been on now had no bulbs. How embarrassing! Obviously they are penny pinchers here. If you run a hotel, are lightbulbs too much to ask? Apparently so! There were small streams of bugs running across the wall by our headboard (see photo), and if that's not bad enough- bubbling plaster, rusty toilet, dirty pool, highway noise all night, someone jumping on the floor above us, breakfast plate noise beginning at 645am outside our room. We came here with a group otherwise I would never have chosen this place and will NEVER return. For a little more money, you can have better and quieter accommodations where you won't feel itchy and scolded. We are a mature couple, not kids. Very INSULTED by the owners behavior and reprimanding! Literally everyone else we encountered in Costa Rica was charming and kind, always patient and smiling. Except here. Scowls and shrugs only. Ugh!! STAY AWAY. …
