The staff was awesome. We took the river boat fro Tamarindo and got dropped off on cove of bula bula. We walked to beach for a couple of hours and returned to hotel. Had drinks and lunch and were allowed to swim in pool. Beautiful quiet hotel. Looks like the perfect place for quiet getaway. Beautiful people great service. ❤️👍🇨🇷

Wally and his staff will take very good care of you. We spent 4 nights here and enjoyed every minute. The food was excellent, drinks were generous, and I agree with another reviewer that it is a "cozy, peaceful place." We had emailed Wally ahead of time that we need transportation from the airport, paddle boards, an ATV tour, and a catamaran sunset cruise, and he set everything up for us. No thinking or stress on our part! If you want to get away from the big resorts and stay at a friendly, relaxing spot, a brief ferry-ride from Tamarindo, stay here.

We spent two nights at Hotel Bula Bula. Wally, the owner originally from California, is a long-time Costa Rica resident. He's very attentive to details and cooks up the best french toast as a breakfast option. The rooms are on cozy and beautifully decorated with tropical art and painted in bright but tasteful colors. The hotel is located at the edge of an estuary that separates peaceful Playa Grande and the bustling touristy town if Tamarindo. Wally can call a water taxi that will transport guests directly from his hotel's dock to the beach at Tamarindo. The 10 minute boat ride costs about $4 USD per person each way. Since is eliminates the need for a 30 minute drive to Tamarindo, the water taxi is a much better alternative. It's also a scenic ride past the mangrove estuary. Later we also booked a 90 minute morning tour of the estuary with the same boat operator for $15 USD per person. It's a good price that allows viewing of crocodiles and birds. We LOVE the location of Hotel Bula Bula. It was the ideal place offering beautiful peace of Playa Grande just a 5 minute walk away (and yes...there are restaurants nearby), with the crazy crowded touristy flavor of Tamarindo just a 10 minute boat ride away. The little swimming pool at the hotel was delightful and beautifully landscaped. Wally's individually prepared breakfasts (not a buffet) are ample with fresh fruit, excellent coffee, and choice of french toast, pancakes or eggs cooked to order. This place is so nice that we met an American couple that returned for their fifth year in a row. This visit was for 3 weeks!!!

A bit out of the way , but well worth the effort to get here ! We were welcomed and made to feel like Bula Bula family right away . Our room was very comfortable and quaint , the staff were all so friendly and helpful. They helped to arrange excursions , called taxi service for us and gave us much appreciated advice . And the food at the Great Waltini's was great too. If you are looking for a small , friendly and beautiful area to spend a few days in, then this is it ! Thanks Wally and staff !

We were so looking forward to eating dinner at Bula Bula near the house on Playa Grande that we rented for Spring Break, but unfortunately the service was terrible, the food was undercooked, over salted and took forever to arrive, and the clueless owner was right there and did nothing to intervene to improve things. Our server was on his phone the entire time either texting, surfing apps, or talking. We had to ask for more water after sitting for about 35 minutes and no one came to refill drinks. Our appetizers took about 45 minutes to arrive. The shrimp quesadillas were ok, but I didn’t notice any shrimp in them. The guacamole served with the quesadillas was like bad American blended smooth guacamole sauce compared to authentic guacamole. The calamari was such a small serving and more like onion rings than calamari. The jalapeño poppers were wrapped in slimy bacon and had no filling like you would think would be in ‘poppers’. Just jalapeños halved and wrapped in bacon. Then our main course finally came. Our daughter ordered butterflied prawns, but what she got was sautéed shrimp - not butterflied at all and very small. Our sons ordered mahi mahi and swordfish. The mahi mahi was ok but very salty. The swordfish was raw about 2/3 of the middle. I would understand if it was ahi, but I’ve never seen seared raw swordfish before. We sent it back reluctantly to be cooked some more, and it came back charred to a charcoal crisp. My husband and I both had the filet mignon ordered medium-rare. We always order our steak medium rare all around the world and we know what we mean by medium rare. This was overly salted to the point of almost not edible and seared and completely rare. We just are around the edges because after sending our sons swordfish back we didn’t want to send back the steak. So we left a big hunk of the raw middle of our steak in each plate. Finally, the Cabernet Sauvignon that we ordered to go with our steak came out chilled and with chilled glasses. It was an OK wine after we let it warm up, but the waiter had no idea how to serve wine. When he offered us mixed drinks from their drink menu we said that we would rather have wine since we were going to have steak tonight. He offered a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Grigio. We asked if they had any red wine and he said Merlot and then seemed confused about whether there should be more options. So I asked if he had a Cabernet, and he said yes. When he brought it to the table to serve, in addition to bringing chilled glasses, he just poured our glasses and did not offer a taste before filling the glasses. Unfortunately, our waiter seemed far more interested in the soccer game that was on the TV and his phone than trying to make sure that his guests were happy. We sat at our table with nothing to eat for 45 minutes. No chips, no bread, ... nothing. And we had to ask for water to be refilled. On top of that the food was terrible, the waiter seemed to be upset with the cook but not offering any help and not doing anything to make his guests happy. We were polite and paid a small tip on top of the service charge that was already included in our check. Unfortunately, it was our last night in Costa Rica and the worst meal we’ve had the whole time we’ve been here.
