We only stayed for a night after friends recommended this hostel because of its price (12$ for a dorm) and the open kitchen. It was okay and cheap (at least for Fortuna) for a night, but if we had wanted to stay in the Arenal area longer, we would have switched hostels immediately! Why? - when we checked in, the guy at the reception desk seemed bored and far from friendly ("you will find the wifi password behind the door"... after we told him that this is not the case he gave us the pw, but he still told the "behind the door" story to everyone checking in and guests ended up helping each other out - so much for caring about your guests) - the "hot" showers do not work (and YES we know how to use them correctly, because we already used them in many other Hostels) - the open kitchens are not very well equipped - the bathroom (especially shower) was dirty - the common area seemed to be a construction site, although we saw no one working there. The table of the common area was covered in dirt and construction equipment, so we could not use it - no atmosphere and noisy even in the night as it is situated on one of Fortunas main streets - no breakfast Advantages: - no bunk beds, but comfortable single beds and very spacious lockers - tour agency right on site if you like to book one of the ridiculously overpriced tours in the area (which is not the hostel's fault!) - 5% discount for the also ridiculously overpriced store next door - central location which is close to lots of different shops and - again - ridiculously overpriced restaurants…
The 6 of us stayed in the 8 bed dorm. The good: It's a nice, clean and large room, no bunk beds. The lockers can fit full size backpacks. The hotel is in a convenient location (going to have street noise like all hostels on the main street.) The downsides: -Kitchen has no oil, spices, and only 2 forks. We ate spaghetti with spoons. -No hot water in shower despite being advertised. . Would not allow use of another shower until extended arguing. Other room had no hot water either. Many other reviews state no hot water so when the staff said to try flipping the breaker they were clearly bluffing. An excuse of piping repair doesn't make sense either since it's a line heater. The live wires on it are exposed presenting a serious electrocution risk. -Outlet near my bed didn't work. All others did though. -The wifi signal from another hostel was stronger than ours. -Staff gave recommendations for a empty club and a bike shop that charged double the normal rate. -No free coffee or breakfast which some cheaper hostels offer. We were going to leave after the first night but we requested a discount if we were going to continue to stay. It is currently one of the more expensive hostels. …
A good hotel to base yourself in in La Fortuna. We were in room 12 which was the end room ....large ..clean. outside was a hammock and table and chairs. The hotel has a small kitchen which was great. Its located in a central location in the town, some good restuarants nearby.
This hostel is well centered in La Fortuna and you can find everything you need around it. Rooms are cleaned daily, the service is good, but there is not much to do at the hostel itself. There are few hammocks near the front office, and there's a bar with pool tables on the second floor, but that's it. Rates are also cheap at 12$ USD per night in a dorm. Would recommand.
The staff was helpful and friendly in booking tours and giving information. The common areas were quaint and the location was amazing. But the rooms left a little to be desired. They were very hot, and there was only one fan for an 8 person dorm. I was lucky enough to get a bed near the fan, but my friend was not. It was a couple of hot nights for her.
