Wonderful rooms (clean, neat, spacious and beautifully decorated) and lovingly kept gardens. Unfortunately though the owners attitude dampened our stay. He is arrogant, and although I understand that he knows this country far better than us, there is no need to treat us like idiots and speak to us in a derogative tone (the rest of the staff was very... We do suggest to all guests before they get here by email that a sense of humor is a pre-requisite for the Pura Vida Hotel. I am sorry if you misunderstood my attempts at jocularity and irony as has been noted with a little fun in some guest reviews. Sometimes they do fall flat with some cultures and backgrounds. Ah... We stayed a night at either end of our trip. As we arrived late, we made arrangements for a late meal. We had a light breakfast the next morning and had a car delivered at breakfast (very convenient). The casitas are lovely and the grounds simply amazing. Berni was a fabulous and informative host. After a few days up country,... More

From the street, you'd never guess what lay beyond the locked gate of the hotel: a spacious, beautiful garden filled with trees and flowers. We stayed in the Katydid cabin, a huge place with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen. The beds were super comfortable, the place was clean and conveniently located not far from the... More

We stayed here as bookends on either end of an 11-day jungle adventure down on the Osa Peninsula. I can't say enough good things about Pura Vida. It's reputation on TripAdvisor is well-earned. We stayed here first for four days when we arrived in the country. The taxi at the airport was easy to find, and there was someone at... More

Be sure to stay here at the the beginning or end of your Costa Rica vacation. We stay here as much for the pleasures of the place itself as for the staff and owners. Yeah, it's a tropical paradise. Beautiful creatively designed grounds and rooms. Delightful, humorous and helpful owners. The breakfast features a potpourri of local fruits that are... More

I live in the area and wanted to get out of the house, but needed to stay very close to the center of Alajuela. This was the right spot. Wow! We stayed in a fantastic private villa (Toucan) beautifully decorated with a huge bathroom and private patio area. The grounds were magnificent and the dogs were a great addition, as... More

Can't say enough about Pura Vida. My son and I arrived late into San Jose. It's a very quick cab ride from SJO (fare paid by Pura Vida), they had meals awaiting our arrival, the rooms and the grounds are exceptional and they arranged to have a rental car ready for us the following morning. We embarked for seven days... More

We really enjoyed our stay here. The suite was very luxurious compared to everywhere else we stayed in Costa Rica. The grounds are lovely and worth an explore. The food is also top notch, 5 star hotel standard in my opinion. It is very close to the airport (10 minutes if light traffic, 20+ if busy). The owner and staff... More

My sister and I stayed here one night after dropping my sons off at the airport, wish we had stayed longer. The grounds are beautiful, safely tucked away in a locked compound so we felt very secure. There is an abundance of beautiful plants with wildlife to go with them. Vincent, the manager at the time we were there, was... More
