To make a long story short, I had a very unpleasant experience at this hostel on my second and final stay, the guy from the previous night should have scheduled my shuttle because I talked to him about it, but then didn't. The guy the next morning (when the shuttle should have been) basically accused me of lying and had no desire to help me in any way. Overall, I didn't particularly get the impression that the staff cared about anything at all, and I would recommend you spend a few extra dollars and stay at a hotel in Alejuela, or even better, if your flight isn't too early, stay at the AMAZING backpacker's hostel in San Jose, and then take the bus in for your flight the following day. Avoid this hostel.

I was a bit worried after reading some of these negative reviews but I found everything went smoothly for my one night stay. I enjoyed beers, pizza and the view on the roof top patio, although they were getting low on beer by the end, it’s very small. My private room was clean, good wifi, shower, towels and soap with a simple bed. Staff was helpful, my free shuttle came on time to take me to my early flight, and there was coffee ready in the reception area. It’s a simple vibe here, gets the job done if you’re in transit on the way to the airport.

The receptionist 'José' was rude to myself and my friends on numerous occasions, especially when checking out. My friends and I were staying for one night before we fly out of CR and checkout is at 11. We checked out before 11 but requested if we could stay a little longer, as our flight is not until later that afternoon. He sighed and said "yes but only until 12, after then it will be $5 each...", which is absolutely ridiculous considering all we wanted to do was sit and play cards, not making any noise whatsoever. I thought this was a 'backpackers hostel', lenient towards backpacker problems??
At 11:55, José came over and turned off the light while we were playing cards, we said we will just finish this game and leave, he sighed again and just continued to stare at us for the rest of the 5 minutes.

I have never met a ruder receptionist in my entire life, and strongly advise anyone against visiting this hostel.
If I could give less than 1 star I would.
Beds were also awful, with no plugs nearby. No soap in the vicinity of the hostel. False advertisements claim free drinks for new arrivals.

Awful experience

The place is close to the airport and I booked it because of the free shuttle. I waited in the lobby for over an hour with other guests for the shuttle. When it came the front desk person didn’t tell anyone it had arrived. We were on a sign up sheet as well. When I asked him about when the shuttle was coming he just shoved his phone in my face (to show me the time) and said it had already left. Why he wouldn’t announce it to the people waiting I have no idea. It seems he was incapable of performing his job. I also watched as he shouted at another guest to “get out or pay me $5”. The guest was sitting in the lobby after checkout and it seems the front desk clerk wanted payment for sitting in the lobby. I would never stay here again. Having staff be this rude and shout at people is beyond unprofessional, it’s just plain mean.

When we were there, they just asked what time we needed a ride, and had someone pick up the 2 of us even though it was at like 4:30 am.
