We stopped here while on a road trip because of inclement weather. We got a great rate on the room and stayed in a corner on the top floor. There was a nice view of the river and the street. The room was very large, with beautiful furniture and gorgeous historic features. Keep in mind this is an old hotel....

While in town for a bar mitzvah, we stayed at the St James, a lovely old hotel by the river, steps from the historic Pettus bridge. Selma has seen better days, and hopefully will again -- and the St James Hotel feels like the courageous epicenter of that revival. Staff were simply lovely, room was gracious and spacious, hallways wide...

I was booked into this hotel by someone else. She did so because of the great reviews and she had faith in the St. James Hotel. My husband and I were there for a performance with 6 other members of our cast. Upon check in, we find out there is no water to shower with and no way to flush...

Lauretta, I am sorry for the problems you encountered during your stay. Unfortunately, prior to your arrival, we had a major plumbing problem that required us to turn the water off at the main. Based on estimates provided by the plumber, we believed that complete the work before your arrived at the hotel. Sadly, it took longer than he expected....

Selma has so much history and the St James is right in the cusp of all that is charming in this town. Looking over the Alabama River, the St James has it's very own 'ghost in residence'. Very southern it has the feel of New Orleans or Savannah. I completely recommend your stay in this quaint establishment.

My partner and I (both British) recently stayed at the St James Hotel for one night whilst passing through Alabama, retracing the civil rights movement. I must admit we were pleasantly surprised given previous reviews. Selma seems to be a town where there has been a lack of investment in recent years, exemplified by there being so few things to...

Stayed at the St. James while in Selma 2 weeks ago. Very interesting history and period décor. Highly recommend visiting to experience its rich history but wouldn't recommend staying more than a couple nights. It's just not a real comfortable place. We had trouble finding rooms with working air conditioners. No air conditioning in lobby or hallways. Arrived late and...

Me and my husband stayed at this hotel. The desk clerk was very nice and informative. There was a maintenance man named Howard that provided us with anything we needed. He went out of his way to ensure we enjoyed our stay. The beds are comfortable. I love the antique look of the room. The downfall was that our room...

I stayed at the St James 4/5/2015 and ended up leaving the hotel. When this hotel first opened, it was most certainly a 4-5 star property, but since then, management has changed several times, and it is currently owned and managed by the City of Selma. Below are some of the substantive issues that I encountered during my stay: 1....

I usually begin by hotel searches by finding the newest hotel near my destination. So glad I didn't do that when visiting Selma this past spring! First of all, this is a historic hotel so you shouldn't expect a brand new, shiny place. What you can expect is a building draped in history with an old South feel. I would...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The St. James Hotel was built in 1837 and is one of the few river front hotels, which remained standing after the Civil War. During 1881, it is reported that Jesse and Frank James were guests of the St. James Hotel. The exterior doors and window casings are all original to the hotel. The cast iron fireplace in the lobby is also original. Most of the furniture in the public areas are period antiques bought at Paris antique auctions or donated by individuals. The tea set in the lobby was donated by a lady who is ancestor of Catesby Jones, who was the Commander of the Merrimac in the Civil War. Fabrics and colors used throughout the hotel are historic and have been used to reflect the period when the hotel was in operation. The period of architecture reflects the French influence used extensively during the 1800's. The fountain in the courtyard is symbolic of the artesian well, which was located on the property. ... more   less
