Good location' near the edge of the old French concession area. Next to an up class shopping mall and subway station, easy to find food and close by to most destinations. But ... The building is showing its age, carpet has stains, and shower is getting tired looking. The staff here is non-responsive. Air conditioning is very well, its over... More

The hotel is only a block of the main street, and provided easy access to IAPM Mall. This area is flush with ex-pats, and for western travelers it has both the shopping you would expect, and some of the best restaurants in the area on the top floors (with views). Free wifi and all of the amenities that you would... More

This hotel came recommended by a friend as a good base to explore the French Concession and Shanghai and they were right. The location is amazing - 3 min walk from Shaanxi South Road Station. The neighbourhood is very safe, we were walking around at 1 am and never felt unsafe. Easy subway transport from Pudong (Maglef + subway =... More

First visit to what was previously a Howard Johnson. Smart reception area; check in was smooth and efficient. Keycard system for lifts and room, so no young ladies wandering around the hotel. Room was very comfortable, large shower, desk. Free wife but have to relog on if you go to restaurant or reception. Price RMB 730 very reasonable, but breakfast... More

The hote is situated just about 5 minute walk from the subway and offers also a walking distance to the centre of the city. We had a little problem at the check-in as nobody had a credit card and a debit card could not be used for the deposit, but we solved it by giving Euro as a deposit. The... More

This is my second time in 2 years staying in this hotel. Would recommend it and I will probably come back again. The recept staff tried their very best to speak some English. Can understand they do not have much opportunities to speak English living in China. But they do understand a conversation. Clean, well maintained just as previous Howard... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
