The ROYAL COURT is located on a small backyard road of Middle Huaihai Road. Not easy to find especially at night. The level of cleanliness was OK. Breakfast is chinese with instant noodles and porridge, no coffee. Good for one nuit only! Service at reception was efficient and helpful.

Agree with other recent reviews to say that this hotel is one to avoid. The room was dirty when we arrived and lots of the decor is well past its best, peeling wallpaper, heavily marked walls. The restaurant serves a buffet - I dread to think how long the food has been out - a health hazard in waiting I...

This hotel is one to avoid. By staying here you will have staff smoking in the hotel lobby, dated looking rooms and hallways and paper thin walls. The room we were in was very badly laid out with a chair in front of the tv and a wardrobe which could only half be opened. The bathroom was very dated and...

I recently stayed three nights at this hotel and I have to say it's FILTHY! I booked this hotel based on the reviews on TP and Bookings.Com. I am not sure how his hotel manages to get a 76% approval rating. Location is good as its central to most key sites and shopping. That's about the only positive thing this...

We stayed 3 nights here and the room was not even worth 3 stars. Bathroom was so disgisting, it has not been cleaned up as we checked-in. Hairs everywhere, bugs in the room... Why do chinese people include only one breakfast, if the hotel is booked for two persons?! I don't get that. Never again.

Small, clean and quiet. Away from any main road and no traffic noise. Clean and comfortable. Basic toiletries, so bring your own if you use fancy stuff, no tea or coffee in the room. There is a electric kettle. Breakfast is very simple. The courtyard has these huge trees that are lovely and give a quaint look to the place....

Spent 3 nights here for business and was creeped out at night with the alley entrance when checking inbbut was pleasantly surprised by the the spacious rooms in the deluxe suite. Great central location but the breakfast was under my expectations, better to grab something at Wagas down the street

Great accommodation located slightly off the street at Middle Huaihai Road (less traffic noise). We were upgraded to a very spacious suite after the room we booked on non-smoking floor was reeking of cigarettes! Staff were very courteous & prompt in addressing our concerns. The room is furnished in very charming Chinese style and has a PC with internet access....

Kia ora and warm Pacific greetings. This was my first long haul trip to the northern hemisphere from New Zealand. Because the hotel is so centrally located I was not expecting the hotel to be so quite which was great for me being a light sleeper. The room was very tastefully decorated but Chinese beds are very hard indeed. We...

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
