The Okura Garden Hotel is located in a very nice place of the city. Tree lined streets, Shops and Restaurants and many attractions easy to reach. The style of the Hotel is fantastic. It sits on the former French Club of Shanghai. Many art deco items, beautifull Lobby and full of history. Even Mao was here back then. The staff... More

We have great history which embodied by the frontage built between 1925 / 27 by a French architect and was the French Tennis Club. Location is great. They upgraded me without me even asking. But I was really disappointed about the breakfast buffet. Wide variety but tastes soso. No decent Western bread. Sour coffee, I only recommend if you are into asian breakfasts. After that I went to the spa and I was really dissapointed that as inhouse guest I had to pay 50... More

Have to say I was disappointed. It's not a cheap hotel so I expected a better facilities and nicer rooms. One thing I liked was their Japanese breakfast option, but I wouldn't come back in my next business trip.

Basically a mediocre hotel, nothing more, nothing less. The dated facilities feel depressing. You'll walk in and realize you got what you paid for or possibly less. Service will drive you mad if you aren't used to being nickel-and-dimed and expect to be able to resolve issues with a manager in English. That's just not going to happen.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
