Stayed here for 2 nights, as part of a couple, and I have to say I can't recommend the place enough. We were made to feel comfortable and welcome from the onset. The building is clean and well kept by the ever tentative house maid. Ideally located in the French Concession area so bars, restaurants and transport links are close... More

We like to stay in amongst it all and Magnolia Bed and Breakfast fit the bill. It is a 3 story house in the former French concession. We had the top floor ink and water suite. It has a small balcony and a king size bed, it's own bathroom with a separate shower in the bedroom. There is a small... More

Fist, some things that we (a couple) did appreciate. The location, in the French Concession, is great. Our room was clean and tastefully furnished. The breakfast was good (although you have so specify the day before at what time you want it). We did not meet Miranda in person, but her housekeeper was very nice. On the other hand, the... More

The Magnolia B&B is a delightful, unassuming house right in the middle of a tree-line street in the French Concession. Only a few rooms, quite plainly furnished, but comfortable and all with en-suite. Above all, friendly. Of course, if you want to have a smart address for business, by all means stay in one of those flashy boxes where you... More

Highly recommended if you're new to Shanghai. This was our first time in China so we needed somewhere that was used to foreigners to help us settle in. Miranda was very helpful. She's fluent in English and friendly, answered my queries by email before we left, and waited for us to arrive even though our flight had been delayed 3... More

Magnolia B&B is in the heart of the French Concession area. You are in a fairly ordinary street which is lovely because you can enjoy real Chinese life. Very nice to watch people going to work etc as you have breakfast. it is also its disadvantage in that Chinese life starts very early in the morning and is very noisy.... More

The great things: 1. The owner was very helpful, spoke perfect English, etc. 2. Breakfast was really good - both Chinese and Western options 3. Room was generally comfortable (linens, no street noise, etc) The drawbacks: 1. Location isn't great. Was a bit of a walk with our bags from the nearest subway stop, so would suggest getting a cab... Thank you for the review! There're 3 subway stations near us -- 400 meters from Changshu RD station (Line 1 & Line 7), or 700 meters from South Shanxi RD station (Line 10), or 800 meters from Jing'an Temple station (Line 2 & Line 7). Considering each station has multiple exits, I suggest a best route from each station in... More

I was welcomed by the housekeeper at 2am in the morning. Everything ready for me. The next morning Miranda went out of her way to assist me to get a local english labelled map, phone sim, metro card and to the bank. Everything i needed to see the sights of Shanghai independently. The room was comfortable and the all day... More

We enjoyed our two-night stay at Magnolia, a charming b&b nestled along a gorgeous curved, tree-lined street--and just a minute from the heart of the action. Miranda promptly answered our emails and made us feel welcomed. The reception area is cozy, full of books and guides on Shanghai. We enjoyed the complimentary tea and coffee, and appreciated the hearty breakfast... More

I stayed in the Green Room for two nights (about 125 €/night). There was no desk and no wardrobe in the room. The water in the shower was not flowing off and there was black mould at the shower curtain. There was also a mouldy smell in the room. Wifi was very very slow and sometimes not working at all.... Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
