The beach is lovely but it is remote, the food is lovely but the menu is seriously limited. The staff are friendly but generally stoned from about 9am including the Tuk Tuk driver who actually fell asleep at the wheel one day, the manager is a bit of a jekyll and hyde, saw him lose it at another guest for querying their bill, he had to be physically restrained by his family and the guests kicked out the back door into the mangrove after this we felt a bit vulnerable. In all I didnt feel entirely comfortable here but if you get a beach front cabana (not advertised but a lot nicer than the advertised ones so I am told) you will be OK for a few days otherwise I would stay at the ganesh garden next door.

Well after we checked in to our room getting a quite cheap rate for an amazing cabana we started reading tripadvisor reviews about a crazy owner. We got so scared and paranoid that we stayed very quiet and did not have any meals at the restaurant, were simply out most of the time, trying not to encounter with staff!
We stayed only two nights and decided to leaving because of the psychotic owner, however we have never met him. I guess sometimes it's better not to read the negative reviews as it can affect your stay pretty badly even though nothing really happened.
All in all, the room was quite cheap for that area and very nice! So I am sure you will enjoy as long as you are not paranoid about that owner.

We arrived just at sunset which was lucky. The buffet was really good! And friendly staff. Beautiful "jungle" garden behind the cabanas.

We didn't live there only sat down for dinner.
Great buffet with both fresh seafood and authentic curry.

The following post describes what happened to me on Nov 16, 2014.

I returned to the hotel at approximately 23:30 after eating dinner elsewhere. The gate was locked and all the lights in the hotel complex were turned off so I called out for someone to open the gate. The manager (recognizable by his bald head and big muscles) appeared and immediately started cursing at me and accusing me of waking up his other guests. He then started pushing me and threatening me. He said things such as "we are in Sri Lanka and I can do whatever I want". I tried to calm him down and reason with him by telling him that he didn't inform me of a curfew. His response was "I don't need to tell you everything". He then told me I had to leave the hotel immediately. After stuffing my belongings into my backpack I escaped along the beach where I had to throw crackers to the stray dogs to keep them away from me. Further down the beach I found some young guys talking outside a hotel. Even though all the rooms in their hotel were booked they let me sleep on the massage bed.

Well, it would be a very relaxed place, if there wasn't this mad owner! We had given our laundry on arrival but the next day when we collected it, it was partly still dirty and wet and it smelled really bad. We complained und told the owner that we wouldn't pay the full price. After a few minutes of arguing he got very angry. Suddenly he attacked me and started a fight. Two guys of his staff joined him and one of them even had a knife in his hand! Even though there were several guests witnessing the whole scene, they didn't care at all and continued to hit me. I don't know what's wrong with this guy but that's certainly not the way how to treat customers! My wife had to take me to a doctor. According to the police, he is well known as a very aggressive person and apparently, this hasn't been the first time he got in trouble with locals or tourists. For me it was "Paradise in Hell"!

We stayed 2 nights in a cabana by the sea.
The room is very basic but only a few meters from the sea and it's why we chose it.
There is a space betwen the roof made of palm tree leaves and the walls, for a good ventilation. Unfortunatly through this way rodents use to come ( squirels at day time and ( cocotree ? ) rats at night. We heard them and, in the morning, we found our 2 small backpacks bitten and torn.
We decided to leave the hotel and as we were checking out and complaining to an employee, the manager started to shout at us, insulting us, and threatening us. He was litterally foaming and willing to punch me ( he is young and like a gorilla) .There were only 2 frightened women in the restaurant at this morning time. He cursed us while we leave the place and we took a fast transport to leave this horrible place.
We read after on tripadvisor that a lot of people had the same bad experience.
It's a shame that a man, obviously unbalanced, stay in touch with tourists and behave badly with a total impunity, in a country where the tourism and its rising are the first priority.

We stayed there for one night and it was perfect, the next night he Suddenly snapped at us, cursing and yelling , trying to hit my friend.
The staff had to hold him and restrain him. He ordered us to leave in the middle of night and forced us to pay for that night. The staff didn't let us go and wouldn't unlock the gate before we paid for the second night. We left in panic and had to look for some other place. We were afraid and horrified!
DO NOT STAY THERE. ITS NOT THE FIRST OR SECOND TIME HE IS VIOLENT TO CUSTOMERS !!
BE WARE ! THE MAN HAS ISSUES.

One piece of advice- just don't go there!
To cut a very long story short- we are three young girls Traveling in Sri Lanka. This was the second night of our stay at this place. We ordered hot water for tea, the water were indeed hot but salty!
My friend and I went to see whether there was a problem, maybe we offended the owner in some way.
At first he completely disregarded us. When I said we'd like to check out the next morning he started cursing me. He got himself really excited over this and got up- and was literally one inch from my nose cursing me.
He raised a hand on me, hit my arm and he's workers that seemed quite accustomed to this type of behavior of his were holding him back. The time was- 10PM and he was forcing us to check out instantly and pay the bill for the whole night. The entire time he was still trying to hit me. We ran and packed our stuff. When we came to leave eight workers were waiting outside our room to make sure we paid. They locked the gate. We had to find a new place to stay in the middle of the night.

Terrible experience, this left a very bad mark on the place for us.
Honestly, I've been traveling in the east for six months now and it's the first time I encountered such behavior.

I hope the police will be wise enough to do something about this before someone gets seriously injured.

during check-in we were shown a concrete storage room hut in the back away from the beach behind all the cabanas. I told Chaminda this wouldn't do and that we had booked a cabana on the beach.

I calmly explained that we had lived in Asia for years and that I might stay there but we wouldn't pay the same rate. We have visited Sri Lanka 6 times since 2009 and I wasn't prepared for what happened next. If only I had read the other reviews here in Tripadvisor first... The owner started shouting and cursing at me and my wife (in front of our then 6 year-old daughter and other guests!). He threatened to hit me if we didn't leave immediately. We, of course, agreed to leave but he kept after us. I had to call the police from my mobile and only then did his staff step in to try to calm him down. One of them whispered that he has a knife in his pocket and that we should leave ASAP. later the police told me that he is a known local "hot head" and they have been called about him many times. They encouraged us to file a complaint with the Sri Lankan tourism authority.

Four of us ate here after reading the positive review in the Lonely Planet. There's a buffet option for LKR1500pp (or Rice & Curry for LKR750pp). The former includes a table buffet of vegetable dishes, meat & fish from the BBQ, plus dessert. The latter only includes the veggie dishes.

Our first issue was that the different options & price hadn't been very well explained at the start of the meal. Our second issue was the quality of the food. We ate at 8.15pm by which time the food tasted as though it had been left out for some time, e.g. the fish & prawns from the BBQ were very dry, the calamari did not smell fresh, and the dessert (fruit salad and yoghurt) had a distinct 'on the turn' bitterness. There were also two types of small cake that were stale and tough.

Having eaten, we expressed disappointment with the meal and said we were not happy to pay for the full buffet on account of the low quality of the food and how little we had consumed of it. At this point, the manager became very threatening and plainly implied he and his friends (who had started to crowd around us) would beat us up if we didn't, repeating 'pay me my money or you will see what happens'. My wife, who was shocked asked him if he was threatening us and he said 'yes'. He was animated, prodding his finger at my wife & I, hopping up and down and said this was not the first time he had fought with tourists.

Our strong recommendation would be to not visit this place under any circumstance. We have reported this to the tourist police in Kandy. Our hotel manager confirmed this is not the first time issues have been had between the management & tourists - but don't just take our word for it, please see other reviews here on TripAdvisor of this Thug's violence towards his guests. We have also written to the Lonely Planet to review their irresponsible endorsement.
