An old colonial property, the hotel had good and bad points. On a corner by Kandy Lake, its white exterior will be on your camera. The lobby is spacious. The staircase, with its red carpeting, looks very nice. The elevator, needing to close two metal doors, is an old gem. The room was large. There were coffee and tea facilities. The a/c unit was quiet. The bar had some character. The dinner buffet in the restaurant was by and large standard fare, discounted 20% [400 rupees] for residents. I always enjoy a place with an omelet chef for breakfast. The road noise was not much of an issue, bearing in mind it is single pane windows. You could leave things charging in your room when out It has some negatives. The exchange rate offered was a tad lower than seen elsewhere. The shower rod was flimsy, the curtain itself not going around the available rod ie water going where it should not. The bathroom trash can has seen better days. The wifi was good on arrival day but not available on departure day in the room, needing to go to the lobby for access. The speed to upload photographs was tortoise-like at best; impossible at worst. Speaking of worst, the bar service on the second day was terrible when I asked to pay my bill. Appreciate I was the only customer at one stage in the late afternoon. The waiter whom I spoke to about it proceeded first to clear the bottles away from the table, give temple dressing instructions to a lady and go somewhere to get oranges. I finally had to ask a group of three others standing around for my bill. None of them either had asked if they could help. Overall, the location on the lake near the Temple of the Tooth was great but some basic service expectation levels need to be met.

There are elements of a once grand and elegant hotel. Sadly, however, it requires a significant upgrade and refurbishment. I have to say, though, that there is still a wonderful feeling of victorian grandeur remaining and you can imagine the plantation owners from the pictures dotted round the walls, relaxing in the lobby and bar in its heyday.
Nevertheless, nostalgia is not enough to make me want to stay here again. The biggest criticism i have is the extremely poor customer service. The breakfast staff were inattentive , breakfast was basic and the coffee was little more than coloured water. So much so that we had to go to any number of good coffee shops in the area to get a decent cup of coffee. Pool service from the bar was non-existent despite there being plenty of waiters available. The internet was abysmally slow and again we used any number of coffee shops in the area to get decent speeds.
The plus point of our room was a comfortable bed and a good A/C, although you don't really need A/C as the rooms high ceilings and shade from the sun made the room cool anyway. I noticed that there was no smoke detector in the room nor did there look like there was any in the corridor. There were two fire extinguishers at the end of the hallway. The negative points of the room were the noise from the street outside and intermittent hot water in the bathroom.

My husband and I stayed at this historic colonial hotel from 26/01/2020 to 29/01/2020, though the hotel needs upgrading the location is fantastic and the staff are courteous and extremely helpful. When we checked in, we had issues with the room and this was immediately addressed by the duty manager who showed us a number of alternative rooms to select from. They went the extra mile to keep us happy and the restaurant manager always made it a point to talk to us at breakfast and made us very welcome. On the whole from the reception staff to the housekeepers, they were all extremely helpful and should we visit Kandy again we will certainly stay at the Queen’s Hotel.
I have given it a 4*, and not 5* because the hotel itself needs some modernisation!

I would give Queens 3.5 if that was possible - but not 4. You don't stay here expecting shiny, new, 5 star facilities but there are some things that could be better. On the plus side it would be impossible to find a more conveniently sited hotel to visit Kandy's central attraction, the Temple of the Tooth. Literally just across the street from the entrance. I was lucky to be allocated a room facing the inner swimming pool courtyard which meant the street noise that so many guests complain about was not an issue. The room itself was pretty small and odd shaped with one of the doors on to the balcony blocked off with the corner of what was obviously a retrofitted bathroom. The furniture was old and a little beat up but in keeping with the hotel's era. The bathroom was a bit cramped but reasonably functional. There was also a safe, kettle and empty mini-fridge. The lighting was a bit dim making reading difficult. The person who showed me to the room noted that there were no hand towels and said they would be brought but 2 days later I was still waiting. It was the same with the pool where I asked for a towel and eventually, after realizing that one was never going to come back with one, hunted them down myself in a side room.

The public areas were mostly a bit grim with worn carpet on the stairs, heavy dark furniture in the large and deserted reception area and a gloomy dining room with unobliging staff (except for one bright smily chap who came out to the unstaffed indoor/outdoor bar a couple of times to get me drinks). The soda in glass bottles was a nice touch in a country where most soft drinks come in plastic.

The wifi was surprisingly good, even supporting a VPN connection and the generator kicked in rapidly with each of the power cuts that are a constant in Sri Lanka these days.

Finally, I left very early for the train on the last morning and had arranged a packed breakfast which I was assured would be at the reception desk when I checked out. Not only as there no packed breakfast at 6am but also no soul in sight in the darkened lobby. Someone arrived after about 5 minutes so I could at least pay my bill and check out but the kitchen was all closed up so the take away breakfast was apparently a figment of the someone's imagination.

All in all, Queens is not such a bad place to stay especially with an inside room. The indoor/outdoor bar whist a bit shabby is actually a very nice place to sit for a drink or two and the proximity to the temple and the downtown make up for many of the niggles.

You will be deceived from the outlook of the hotel when entering it - you will think this is a genuinely posh hotel (the entrance inside looks great), and the staff well mannered and welcoming giving you orange juice as you enter and taking your luggage up to your room. However, the family room (4 adults) we stayed in was not comfortable. Initial thoughts were great view from the window and nice spacious room with closets for our clothes. Thankfully, we were there for one night - the bed springs were coming out of the bed at night and the toilet was unacceptable! The bathtub was very stained and the scratch marks could be seen. It was very old style and the toilet could be cleaned better! There was not enough force from the water to shower in.
However, the location is very convenient. Right next to Daladawa Maligae and there are Kandy Dance Centers nearby. Also, the food was great - there was a great range of food at the buffet for lunch an dinner. Even chefs cooking omlettes and kothu rotti fresh and serving it to you! The plates and cups can be cleaned better

I love unplanned trips.. All hoteliers will definitely understand the stress during this pandemic period. A night in Kandy was the start of what I needed to clear my head after six months of continuously being stuck in an island. I could have never got it right if I hadn’t had the sheer luck to stay at queens. The awesome package was the highlight yet I did not know what to expect until we checked in. Right from the Start, the Security man, bellman, receptionist, and waiters were all accommodating. nothing seemed tough for them. We were given 302 the Edward Barnes Suite (two bedroom), overlooking the holy temple of tooth (Dalada Maligawa) and the Bogambara lake in Kandy. I was mesmerized by the view. The hotel keeps its colonial style with all antique furniture but is well cleaned and all covid safety procedures are carefully carried out. They even served breakfast in the room and we ordered room service for lunch.
It’s just hop, skip and jump to the Kandy City Centre and to most restaurants or a walk in the town. Simply convenient!
We were just lucky to stay there and I would definitely go again!

Thank you to the wonderful team! We hope and pray that the pandemic ends soon and hoteliers will all have their jobs back!

The public areas of this hotel are in the grand style and smart!. The Swimming pool although fine is a bit 50s and their hand rails need fixing. The lift is wonderful, over 100 years old and looks as good as new. I'm afraid the rooms were disappointing. However, they upgraded us at no additional price because the access to the showers in the 1st 2 rooms they showed us were difficult. The room we were finally offered was surprisingly missing a bedside table and light which they rectified quickly. Breakfast was fine, evening meal not top notch. Overall this hotel was worth the experience of staying in a Grand Hotel but there are aspects which need tightening up. The rooms are dowdy and need refreshing. The location is superb, on the edge of the lake and within easy walking distance of the Temple of the Tooth. To avoid traffic noise go for a room facing the pool. Having said this we would stay here again.

We certainly did not select this hotel because of its quality, rather its location, which makes it very convenient if you want to be close to the city and like to walk to places, especially if you want to do an early jog around the lake, go to the temple, check out many varieties of restaurants and shops.

We have stayed in many different room-types in this hotel, but if you do not want to be bothered by the noise, then consider pool side of the hotel. No place in Kandy city is, however, very quiet due to constant traffic noises.

The hotel provides a good buffet breakfast and good alcoholic beverages at the bar. We enjoyed our cocktails near the pool in the evening.

Rooms can range from very good to bearable depending on what you are willing to pay. The hotel is popular with the locals and they seem to benefit from full board at local prices.

Hotel service is very good; all staff members and friendly and helpful.

As we always do, we will stay here again when we return to Kandy.

When we first arrived, the lobby has quite a bit of old world charm.... when we walked in the price started at 90$ USD. When checked on “Booking.com” there was a rate of 27€.... after waiting for 40 minutes for the rooms to be readied... this is where the old world charm wore off. The rooms we were given, AC did not work, the bathroom is very old but clean. Breakfast was the average buffet, nothing fancy. The pool is very dated and the ladder in the deep end is not very solid to use. I do not understand how this can be a 3 star.

We very much enjoyed our stay here. The building is old and has a lot of character - it makes you think of the many people who have walked those floors over the years. Because it is old you have to accept that things may be looking a bit worn and that is all part of the charm of the place. Our room was on the 3rd floor well above the noise from the street and it was huge with a four poster bed.We also had the privilege of having a separate sitting room with views over the lake and across to the Sacred Tooth temple. The bed was very comfortable and the shower effective. However, we did not like the small plastic bottles of shampoo etc which are not in keeping with the spirit of the place and certainly not good for the environment. They could be replaced by refillable dispensers. Its central location makes it ideal for getting to all the places of interest. The bar and swimming pool were pleasant in the hot temperature.
