The impression one gets on entry is that the hotel is a pretty cosy mansion but when one walks about he is surprised by the size of the hotel as it actually has 112 rooms sort of covered by the foliage! The hotel has not done too well in attracting local visitors as the special offer prices were a little high compared to other similar hotels in Kandy. Sri Lanka yet suffers from absence of foreign tourists due to Covid-19 restrictions. It was noted the hotel did not strictly observe the health guidelines, perhaps due to the general attitude in the Kandy area as it has been safe so far. The hotel lies by the Mahaweli River, and walkways and sitting areas have been beautifully arranged along the river bank. The service was excellent and so was the food. Duminda at the restaurant was particularly helpful. Large spacious rooms with a balcony and chairs. The bed was very good and we had a very restful sleep. To access the shower in the bathroom one had to climb into the bathtub, which was particularly difficult for us two elderly guests. I wonder how many guests use bathtubs nowadays; the hotel could either get rid of the bathtubs in most rooms and retain a few for any discerning guests, or fix a step near the bathtubs to make the climb easier. Most hotels do not have bathtubs.

We stayed at Mahaweli Reach for just 1 night. We were not able to enjoy all the facilities. However, I found that the lobby, hotel ground, pool and buffet restaurants are in good condition with good service and a bit of old charm.

The room is of good size but it is a bit dated. There is a control panel by the bedside to control the lights which I think is pretty cool. Our room faced the river and there were a few small animals roaming the yard.

We had buffet breakfast and dinner at the hotel. The choice and quality of food were good. The food was refilled fast. However I think the fruit served at the breakfast buffet should be prepared at cut at the kitchen instead of peeling and cutting by a staff member at the fruit station.

Stayed here for 2 nights in march. Easy check and straight to room, which was clean spacious and comfortable. Toiletries were shampoo/conditioner, body wash and lotion and bubble bath. Room had bottled water, 2 given but more available on request. Beautiful large pool set in garden area with lovely trees and bushes. All staff we encountered were friendly and efficient. Breakfast and dinner was buffet which had good selection of indian and european, so something for everyone. Pool a little cold for some people which was great for me as i had whole pool to myself. Comfy sunloungers and good pool showers. Do the river cruise, 45 mins and a lovely ride 1750 rupees each

This is more of a three star hotel on cardiac arrest needing a significant investment. Basically, it is dirty. The linens are dirty and old. Shower falling apart. Furniture old and dented. No way it’s a five star even for Sri Lanka. And I way over prepaid $200 a night on the hotel website to discover it selling for $60 a night the day I checked in on various websites. I feel ripped.

We stayed here for one night as part of the Kandy tour. The room was very comfortable. We did have an issue with mosquitos in the room so we spent a while having to exterminate them. The room had a sticker seal on the door which showed the room had been sanitised. This was a great touch.

However the shower in the room 501 didn’t work well so we had to take baths instead. This was ok but I guess some who want to wash their hair can’t as it would be cold water only. We also had a lizard in the room which the staff took care of. Well let’s just say it was the entertainment at the hotel.

Evening meal was nice and they have a full range of drinks. The restaurant needs more fans. It was too hot. Easy check out, you pay your bill and you leave.

It was a clean and tidy hotel. Not as modern as some but it was nice.

Dear Guest, Ayubowan and Greetings from Mahaweli Reach! Thank you for your kind endorsement of our product, it is of immense value to us. Its a pleasure to note that the services extended by the team had enabled you in enjoying the time spent amongst us. The architecture of the property and ambience had been inspired by the colonial era of Sri Lanka and we are glad you liked the property. Your concerns expressed have been informed to the relevant teams and corrective action taken in preventing a recurrence of a similar nature, and we apologize for the inconvenience caused. Due to the tropical climate, we sometimes do have gekkos in the rooms though all possible precautions are taken. Thank you

Stayed there as a family just after the Avurudu Holidays in April. I would like to give my review considering both positive and negative facts.

After checked-in, I noticed there were so many guests in the hotel on that day. Since we visited as a family with a baby, I requested ala-carte lunch to the room. But, what I was informed was, since we did the reservation on FB basis, we should get the meals from the buffet and if we order to the room it would be charged separately.

The restaurant was very much crowded. There was one vacant table and I request to prepare it for us and went to get food. Then we had to wait more time since there were no plates. So, we were waiting again. Even after that some of the curry dishes were empty. They requested us to wait a short time, But those were not filled quickly. Therefore we had to satisfy with what was available.

After returning the table, no serviettes and cutleries were there. Again...waiting...

Compared to lunch, dinner was better. But dessert was almost finished early. We had to satisfy with some ice cream and few slices of papaya.

We had a triple room. But there were few milk powder sachets available. Phoned to inform it in the morning. Even though they mentioned those would be provided soon, we had to call 3 times to get those.

The breakfast on the following day was good.

What I have to mention here is, they have a better location and the food was tasty. But, the hotel should consider improving the quality of service. Either they do not have adequate staff or some other issue.

Positive

Nice location
Spacious room
Tasty foods

Negative

Low quality of service

We stayed at Mahaweli Reach on 1st of March 2023 on full board basis. We were warmly welcomed by the staff at the hotel and from the entrance itself we felt the quality of a five star hotel. The food was delicious even though a buffet was not there. All the staff were very friendly and that was felt by us from the beginning to the end of our stay at the hotel. We stayed at a room which was adjacent to the river and the view itself was very soothing. The room was very spacious and the balcony was huge. You don’t get sliding doors in bathrooms like most of the modern hotels in here since this is an ancient hotel but it never reduces the quality of your stay. Bathrooms were very clean too. From the manager, receptionists to the workers at lower level inclusive of barmen and waiters were very friendly to us which would have been a result of a good hotel management. It has a spacious swimming pool and a baby pool which increase the beauty of the hotel. It is also a great place to have parties too and the location downside the swimming pool by the Mahaweli river is very ideal for such. Overall it is a very good five star hotel which I can recommend to anybody who is willing to have a comfortable and regret less stay. We are hoping to stay at this luxurious hotel even next time when we come back to Sri Lanka.

The staff were disinterested when I told them that some of the food had run out during the buffet meal even though I paid a lot of money for the meal. The bill was given to me even though I had not finished my meal. Very poor service by staff. However, pool is great and nice ground surroundings. It's a shame that staff are not up to it.

Atmosphere was good and lighting was adequate. Staff was friendly and welcoming. Food was nearly top-notch with some vegetarian choices. Plenty of space for outdoor activities. A vast variety of facilities. Plenty of restaurants and shops close by with tuk-tuk service.

Swimming pool was ocassionally cleaned though the cluster of leaves may spoil surrounding view. Board/table game room felt warm without a fan or something. Rooms needed to be cleaned a bit more with the mosquito problem fixed. Hotel interior also needed some more cleaning. The whole premise felt outdated.

Could do with new decorations and better TVs in rooms and hotel. Cuisine can expand to few more countries/regions for a larger variety. A few more rooms/extra floor could be added on the riverside.
