We stayed one night as a stop before Machu Pichuu. We dropped our bags and went out to explore the town before dark and to eat dinner. We got back around 10pm, the room had a potent smell of gasoline at first I thought might...More
Lovely hotel - great location, right off the square (which equals noisy until about 10 pm but that’s ok), wonderful breakfast, and all the extras. Our room was big and the bed was so comfortable. There are several areas for lounging, a book exchange, hot...More
My sister and I stayed here before our trek up Machu Picchu. It's a beautiful hotel, with large, very clean rooms. The property is kept immaculate. It was nice and quiet, and very conveniently located. Although I never write reviews, the reason I'm writing this...More

Gringo Bill's was a good place for us. Clean room and bath. Don't remember any odor issue. Don't know about the VAT as our travel agency arranged and paid all our tour fees. Gringo Bill's is just a short walk from the center of Aquas Calientes where the tour buses load for the trip to Machu Picchu. There are numerous food venues, shops with souvenirs, clothing, etc. in close proximity. The train station is fairly close as well.

We just stayed at Gringo Bill's a little over a month ago. I thought the place was very well run, the beds were comfortable and, as I said in my review, the best shower in Peru - plenty of hot water and good pressure. The food in the restaurant is quite good, as well.
I would say, if you choose Gringo Bill's, ask for a lower room just because you might not want to climb up all those stairs. Our room was on the 4th (?) or 5th (?) floor. Good luck.
