This was by far the best meal I had in Morocco, and I went to all the highly rated places in Rabat, Fes, and Marrakech. Do yourself a favor, skip the tourist traps in Chefchaouen that serve mediocre food for twice the price. Yes, it is worth taking a taxi out here. The rabbit tagine had the sweetness and tartness of quince balanced by a mild kick from mustard, and was so tender and succulent. The roasted goat was the best goat I've ever had, falling off the bone and perfectly seasoned. I would have purchased the home-made yogurt they served for dessert if it were available. If this were in NYC you wouldn't be able to get a reservation, and here the 3 course meal is only $15?! I wish I could go back weekly. (My friends and I went two nights in a row.)

We had an unexpected booking mishap at another hotel in Chefchaouen and found ourselves without a place to stay for two nights. We called Auberge Dardara. They gladly accepted us the night of with open arms. In no time, this place became our home. The staff here are incredibly nice, the room was so spacious and cozy. Mohammed and his team are dedicated to the art of hospitality and really care about your experience here.

I haven't even mentioned the food yet... It's out of this world. The best food we had in Morocco--crafted with such care and homegrown right on the same property that you sleep on!

We spent our last 2 nights here of a month long Morocco trip and we found ourselves falling in love with this country all over again.

Thanks for the great time Mohammed and I hope to see you soon.

TL;DR If you have a car/don't mind paying for a private taxi, and are not vegetarian, we can see how this restaurant can provide a nice quiet and tasty getaway from the hustle and bustle of the Medina food scene. As a budget backpacking vegetarian couple, we were a bit disappointed, but that shouldn't necessarily reflect badly on the place itself.

First an important note: it's possible that arrival to the hotel/resteraunt is easier from the correct place outside the medina, but we were already near the CTM station in the main city, and started our 'adventure' from there...

We had read many rave reviews about the restaurant and made a point of leaving chefchaouen in order to see what they had to offer. Instructions online said to grab a ~5 dirham taxi to Bab Taza and get off along the way at the Auberge Dardara. This seemingly simple description turned out to be much more complicated as we tried to understand the mixed use of Arabic, French, Spanish, and Berber of the local cab drivers, that even with the help of Google we were unable to understand one another. What we learned after a couple hours of back and forth between stations and taxi refusals, was that leaving chefchaouen requires a grande taxi (which we already knew), but there are both solo/private and collective/shared grand taxis, which all have separate stations, and then even if you find a grand taxi station, there are separate stations for grands leaving chefchaouen to local nearby villages, and those to further cities (Tetouan, Tangier etc). In the end, we succeeded in calling the restaurant and getting very clear instructions from the very patient and helpful owner who spoke perfect English, as well as had him speak with the taxi drivers so they could drop us off.

If this has so far not deterred you, the best way we think to achieve getting the right taxi, is asking a local petit taxi to take you to the Grand taxi station for bab-taza, or ask your guest house host to explain how to get a taxi to bab-taza.

The restaurant has a set menu coursed meal, with a salad or soup starter, tajin of choice main, and desert for 150 dirham per head. The service was very nice, and food was brought out in a timely manner, but despite being some of the only ones there, the waiters would at times disappear for a while.

The fava bean soup was very tasty, and we can see how the Aubergene could potentially be of higher quality than the restaurants in the Chefchaouen Medina. Being vegetarian however, the Tajin tasted overall the same as we had had up until then. We had fig tart and crem de caramel for desert, the former being the much better of the two.

We paid for our meal, which we were pleasantly surprised to see had cost only 120 dirham each since we didn't order meat, and then walked 7 minutes to the taxi station in Dardara to pay a shared taxi 50 dirham to take us alone back to Chefchaouen. (We could have paid 6 dirham each and waited for 4 more people, but it was looking slow and we wanted to get back.)

We had dinner here
One night in September. The food was incredible, service exceptional, overall ambiance magical.

To return to our hotel in Chefchaouen a taxi was organized for us right to our hotel front door.

Lovely evening!
