the resort itself is located in a fantastic place with tonnes of coral located quite close to the beach itself, I was easily able to swim out to them actually which I guess is what I loved the most about the place, I ended up spending hours by myself exploring the different coral reefs. So If you really are gonna spend your time outdoors and not really bothered about the facilities, then I highly recommend Ayer Raja. One of the other things that I really loved the resort for was that it is not posh, why that is a good thing?, well a posh resort is going to make boundaries between you an what Island life is really about. The whole time I was there I managed to make friends with locals, played with football with the kids there, talked to them, so you really get the better idea what Island life is all about. You get to live like the locals do, heck they even allow you to fish for your own food, use the bbq and the kitchen and make your own dinner Island style. Trust me, it is way better than sitting in a fancy restaurant inside a resort building. The facilities themselves are simple, the huts are cute and sorta cosy, everything else is just above usable, so you can survive easily. The reason I gave 5 stars is because its extreme value for what you pay.…

The resort was awesome. The beach was just 1-2 minutes walk away from the chalet. The beach is slighty rocky The manager in charge (Farid) was very helpful. Due to Ramadan Season, a lot of shop was closed, but the place is very peaceful with very less people during ramadan. If travelling with elderly or people who are unable to walk up hill be sure you take the rooms nearer to the reception because of the steep up hill walk for rooms which are located further in towards the forest. If you wish to purchase chocolates / alcohol , there is a small duty free shop nearby (the prices are slightly more expensive) Exp: Tiger Beer which cost RM4.00. Don't expect much from the rooms, the toilet floors was cracked by the sides and there are tiny holes on the ground in the room. Since we didn't spend much time in the room, it wasn't an issue for us. Overall, Loved it. I Would stay in this hotel again!…

Upon arriving at the “resort” we were informed that there was NO running water and that there was a chance of them not having running the next day as well. Not having booked anything else for the night and because it was getting dark we decided to stay. Since we couldn't properly take even a cold shower, wash hands and flush the toilet in 40-degree weather I would automatically give Ayer Raja one star if not for Fariq (manager) and Ali (co-manager?) of the guesthouse who were very friendly and supplied new vats of water when we asked. They also arranged a boat trip for us to Tekek (where the ferry takes you back to Mersing). This is the only reason I give this hotel two stars. Now, onto the rest. The guesthouse's location is a bit away from the ferry (far enough not to hear its noise but close enough to walk carrying 70-liter backpacks). Despite the description on Agoda, there doesn't seem to be anything going on at the hotel grounds. I didn't see the cafe serving food or anybody cooking anything, and usually there was nobody there, ever. If we wanted to talk to Fariq or Ali we could go to the chalets where they were staying and call their name. There quite a few cats (and kittens) around who chewed on my backpack – keep your bags away from them! But they are definitely cute and playful. Genting itself doesn't have a great beach, but if you walk toward the direction of Paya (to the right from the Ayer Raja chalets, away from the jetty) you will see some nice little cafes and bars where you can chill during the evening. There is also a trail which takes you all the way to Paya (we didn't go that far) through a residential area, and you can see lizards, monkeys, birds, squirrels, and big butterflies on the way. This is definitely the redeeming quality of Genting, as I was already regretting coming here having just stepped off the ferry. The guides don't seem to write much about Genting, but I believe you can enjoy one or two nights here, but make sure the guesthouse has running water, or it will be hard getting used to it.…

My last stop on the island and turn out the best and that was due to the crew running this resort. They couldn't do enough for me the food was great as one of the sea view family rooms wasn't in use they gave me that, fantastic I would strongly recommend this as one first and last stop on the island ps this resort doesn't sell alcohol but being free sprited lets you byo

Ayer Raja keeps a couple of rooms spare for fools like us who don't realise it's a public holiday and arrive without booking. So we were very grateful to be able to move there when the other place we stayed was booked up rather than having to leave a day early. The guys who run it are without fail friendly and helpful and always smiling. The room was fairly basic but not much different to other places we looked at and had the advantage of being up the hill so a good view of the sea and on the edge of the rainforest which I personally love. Maybe some of the features were a bit dated and could do with a little sprucing up but nothing that adversely affected our stay. The plants along the path down to the sea are beautiful and look well kept. We didn't take advantage of any of the trips but like all the other accommodation on Genting they will organising snorkelling/diving etc. There is also a restaurant with some great food and it's right next to a Chinese restaurant which is also fantastic. The swimming is not so great at this end of the beach but it's such a short walk to all other parts of Genting it's really not a problem. We didn't visit any other beaches on Tioman but we loved Genting for its peace and quiet, great beach and ease of getting around. There is no huge resort here which is what we wanted and Ayer Raja is a perfectly fine place to stay. …

Tioman is my pick of Malaysian Islands so far and not having reviews to go by, I took a chance with this accomodation. Firstly, few people got off in Genting. This is not the village of choice and is too far and expensive to get anywhere else once there. Ayer's saving grace is its quiet and peaceful location set in a village atmosphere with a friendly owner-manager who will happily share his philosophy on life. "Chalets" (a misnomer) have obstructed sea views but mainly face each other. The aircon and hot water worked. Rooms at Ayer are definitely not new - very dated, with no comforts at all, not even a table or chair. The mattress should have been trashed years ago along with the pillows. Many hotels in Malaysia are so below par for what they charge and they don't care to give tourists disgustingly dirty mildewed mattresses with holes, mouldy pillows and torn sheeting (sheets here OK) even when prices are not budget backpacker - this place was over $40US per night. In fact I suspect these are old asbestos buildings. There are small balconies with plastic chairs to sit out and that is fine but very hot. The standard rooms are back to back and I could hear every sound the couple made in the room adjoining mine - also the joining door did not fit well and I could also see them. So no privacy to be had here. The grounds looked uncared for and the eating area reminded me of school camp. There is no good snorkelling in front but a nice view and shaded beach. I walked to villages either side and it was fabulous but definitely in parts, only for fit walkers with good shoes - lush jungle, the best monkeys and monitor lizards. Snorkelling was OK only down the beach before the hike to the secluded and exclusive JapMala (a must when cashed up!) The heat was murderous. In the other direction is Paya and I managed to get a lift from Condotel which is far preferable to Ayer for the same tarrif (it is really a resort and has a great pool), to the main township of Tekek where the big Berjaya resort, golf course, duty free shops, airport, bars and restaurants can be found. I would go there myself for half my stay and then either Japmala if splurging or the much praised Juara.…

My partner and I took the 3D2N Basic Chalet package which included a snorkeling trip, 7 meals and return ferry transfer. The ferry transfer system in Tioman is the most horrendous I have ever seen. I had to prompt the hotel manager several times before getting a confirmation. I was waiting at the ferry terminal for more than an hour for the hotel rep to arrive with our tickets. We were not told until we asked the day prior to arriving that our package does not include the 6.30am ferry and we had to pay an additional RM20 per person if we wanted to catch the morning ferry or wait till 9am. This should've been clear upfront when we book the package. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the very friendly and helpful owner, Hisham. The chalets were your typical wooden Malay village house. The chalet was clean on arrival but later in the night and the next day, we found ants on the floor. Also, although the windows were covered with mosquito nets we still got bitten. So, bring your insect repellent while you are here. Shower pressure was very low and the flush was not functioning properly. At night we had BBQ dinner which was included as part of the package. That was really good. However, the next day, our lunch was not as hygienic. Snorkeling trip lasted only 30 minutes, partly due to the bad weather and boat condition. We waited for our 7am ferry for 4 HOURS AND MISSED THE BUS. Again, I reiterate, BAD FERRY SERVICES IN TIOMAN. They could not cope with the rising demand on public holidays. Overall, it was a bad experience for me in Tioman. But if you are looking for a budget accommodation with helpful hotel managers, I'll recommend this place. If not, look elsewhere.…

Our stay at the Ayer Raja Resort was great. We stayed a week and enjoyed our basic but nice cabins, with of course a great view of the ocean from our porch! The beds are good but the pillows way too hard, so you might want to consider taking your own. Service wise, the resort were of good help. The staff is friendly and easy going. Location wise it's perfect.
