We met Kurt at the puente and it immediately felt good. He made us feel welcome and also told us we were the only guests at the lodge :) We also met Amo, our boatdriver. The boatride to the lodge was already a highlight: we saw 5 different species of monkeys and I don’t know how many birds. The lodge itself is not very special, but it had all what you need in de jungle. Maybe it needs some maintenance, but it al works! At the lodge we met Marco and in the days following, we experienced Marco is a mastercook! All the food was delicious: from the breakfast to the dinner! We had a pretty full 4 days/3 nights with different excursions. My favorite was looking for caiman when the sun was down. At one evening, we spotted over 20 caiman! Kurt is a very good host who wants to make sure you have a good time. And we did!

We had a wonderful time at Tapir Lodge. The owner/guide Kurt knows and shares so much information on the Amazon - rainforest, animals, insects etc the boat is comfortable and is one of the few with a clean quiet engine and the boat driver spots everything worth spotting. Great hikes, beautiful boat trip, visit to Shaman, good food etc

We enjoyed four nights at the lodge and had such a great experience. Firstly the lodge itself. I would imagine all the lodges are fairly similar, except Tapir would appear to be the only one built in towers. We were in a room at the top level, so in the morning we could watch the monkeys in the tree tops having their breakfast. You are in the jungle, so facilities will be somewhat lacking from other 'hotels', but be assured that everything you need for a comfortable stay is provided. I was disappointed initially that despite their being 24 hour electricity,I couldn't use my hairdryer, due to the supply being unable to cope with the wattage required by a hairdryer, but I got over that quickly! The rooms are basic wooden structures. Shelves are provided for clothes, but no wardrobes ( didn't miss that) The bed was comfy and came with a mossie net, but to be honest we hardly saw a mosquito ( later told due to the alkalinity of the black water around the lodge there wouldn't be many.) The beds were made daily and the bathroom cleaned. Hot water was available in the evenings for a shower but not in the morning as it is solar heated. Yes it probably could do with upgrading/renovation now but we did not feel the tiredness of the interior detracted from the overall quality of the experience. A safe is provided. You are given just one small eco soap and small bottle of shampoo for the entire stay, so make sure you bring some toiletries ( eco friendly if possible) with you as well as lots of mosquito repellant for jungle walks. The food for all meals was excellent, cooked by Raul and Marco. Varied and plenty of it. Bottled water was provided in the rooms and could be refilled from the water containers in the dining area. There was plenty of room in the lodge with hammocks and sitting areas for chilling, but to be honest, the days were spent doing what we had all come to see and do, so we didn't have too much down time. We were one of only three couples, which was fantastic as far as we were concerned. Our guide Joseph-Luis was informative, knowledgeable and with a witty sense of humour. Obviously loves what he does. The canoe handler Peluche was great too and they both went above and beyond when scaling trees to take photos for us of the anacondas! Loved all the activities. Saw pretty much everything we wanted to see except for caymans. We went at the end of the rainy season so the water levels were high. The cayman retreat into the mangroves I believe, however Peluche took a photograph of one on one of the mornings before we had breakfast. It was just outside the lodge jetty in the approximate area where my husband and other guests had been swimming the previous evening! So they were there. An experience of a lifetime for sure and we would heartily recommend the lodge.

We went on 3 night/4 day package in early April, 2019. There were two other couples with us. I must mention that the lodge is in need of upgrading. It doesn't really bother us as the environment and the activities were kept us busy during our stay. There are several lodges in the area and most of the guests are doing the similar activities. We really enjoyed the activities organized by the lodge and special thanks goes to our guide who tried his best to provide his services to us. The meals are really good and tea and coffee available on request. Every day you spent approx. 4- 5 hrs in the boat visiting various part of the jungle for activities. I would like to list some of the points which may assist for the guests who are thinking of staying in Tapir Lodge. - We were picked up from Lago Agrio Airport by the Guide and drove us to El Puente where we got into a motorized canoe. The vehicle we travelled didn't have a good A/C and it was really hot inside. Make sure you ask the driver to switch on A/C at the beginning of the trip. - Packed Lunch was given before we got into the canoe. Canoe ride to the lodge took about 4 hours as the guide explained about the Amazon forest and spent time to look for birds and other animals in the forest. Don't forget to bring sunscreen and water for canoe rides. - Rooms are spacious in the lodge. Expect to encounter some insects inside your room. We found a spider and other small insects. - Usual time for dinner is at 7:30 pm. All members of the group sit together for dinner. The food is very good and have enough quantities. Menu is different for each night. - Water is directly pumped from the river to a overhead tank and use for showers and toilets. Drinking water station is available in the dining area for guests. - No wifi available in the lodge. Power is from solar panels and hair dryers, irons etc. can not be used. No fans in the rooms. - Bring a flashlight and insect repellents. I believe all the lodges in Cuyabeno Reserve have similar facilities. However do not discourage with lack of comforts to visit the Cuyabeno lodges. It was a amazing experience and all of us in our group loved it. We saw anacondas, pink dolphins, sloths, several species of monkeys, many varieties of birds and other insects.

Tapir is the brain-child of Kurt, an Ecuadorian of German background. It is about 20 years old, and showing its age. A bit funky would be a good description. The food was decent but little accommodation is offered for dietary restrictions. Kurt is a fantastic and knowledgable guide, and the wildlife in this area is amazing. As long as it takes to get there, you want to be able to see the birds and animals and learn about the natural history, and Kurt facilitated that. That's why we were there so we were ultimately satisfied with the trip. If you are squeamish, or vegan, you might want to spend more at a fancier place.

We had a blast at Tapir lodge in Cuyabeno. Kurt did not disappoint with his breadth of knowledge, enthusiasm for nature, and fun spirit. His love for wildlife and his lodge were evident in every part of the experience. The food was some of the best food we ate in Ecuador, including veggies which we didn't get much of in Quito. We saw so many amazing animals- from monkeys to sloths to anacondas. We were nervous about seeing snakes but there was nothing to be scared about. Overall, if you are even mildly adventurous and interested in seeing wild animals, this is a great place for you. Also shout out to our boat driver Peluche who was always on the lookout for animals while driving! Nora and Co

The Tapir lodge is perfect place to discover Amazon rainforest. When we came to the airport the driver from Tapir lodge was waiting for us and after 2 hours of very beautifull drive he brought us to bridge .The we first met Kurt and made our first river trip to the lodge. The lodge itself is amazing . We spent there 3 unforgettable nights. Our days we full of activities and probably the best meals we had in Ecuador. (thanks Marco!!!) The best thing about Kurt is not only his extended knoledge but his very primary exitement about the beauty of the nature that he shared with us. He also helped us with taking the photos . Without those photos I wouldn't believe I have been in this wanderfull place.

We stayed for 3 nights and 4 days and were not disappointed. We were a family of 5 (all grown up kids!). We were the only people at the lodge and really enjoyed the food and the staff were so kind and helpful. Our guide was Dr Doolittle! Pajerito was just incredible. His knowledge of the flora and fauna was outstanding. We laughed so much when we were taken on our trek into La Selva with wellie boots and through the swamps we trekked, squelching all the way. We saw so much, the pink dolphins, porcupine, ant eater, three toed sloth, 5 species of monkeys, cayman, spiders including two tarantulas who lived on the walkway to the rooms. Our boat driver and Pajarito were so eagle eyed and spotted everything. Sunsets were incredible. The staff made our visit so special, the accommodation is “tired” and could do with some renovations but as long as you’re happy with that, you will have a wonderful time.

The lodge, staff, FOOD!!! And experience is amazing. We spent a lovely three nights at Tapir Lodge in Sept 2018, for most of our stay we were the only lodgers. The small downsides (and reason for a 4 rather than perfect 5) is it’s rather expensive for what it is + bar tab + tips (which we didn’t expect to pay on top of the already high price). The journey to the lodge is long and the transportation (bus + taxi + boat) has unnecessary waiting time of 2hrs + in between each leg of the journey All in all, this was still a major highlight of our 3 month trip and we were so well cared for by Kurt and his team. We saw an abundance of wildlife from the boat, around the lodge and during jungle treks in the night and day. If you don’t like a little bug action, this is not the place for you. The mosquito nets keep them at bay in then evenings so you can have a peaceful sleep in the rooms with stunning tree top views. We were even lucky enough to see the pink amazon dolphins and spectacular nightly sunsets. Also saw; anacondas, monkeys, macaws, caymans (crocodiles), tarantulas, huge crickets and other spiders, giant trees and much more...

Tapir Lodge is the perfect starting point to explore surrounding Cuyabeno Wildlife Resort. Accomodation in the Tower provides you with the feeling of sleeping right in the jungle. You're gently sung into sleep and awaked in the morning by the surrounding "jungle music" from all kind of jungle inhabitants. The meals at the Lodge prepared by Conejo were among the best we had in Ecuador. Our guide Kurt (apart from being a great entertainer) has an astonishing knowledge of Flora, Fauna and the entire Ecosystem. Together with co guide Peluche they spotted hiding animals in every corner and tree top surrounding our walks and amazing boat tours. For us this was a once in a lifetime experience we will never forget. Nora & Philipp
