The San Michel is few steps away from the small park (or praça) at the center of Largo do Arouche, São Paulo’s downtown gay neighborhood. Take a few more steps and you can queue for a night at Cantho, or keep strolling to cruise the daddy and bear bars on Avenida Vieira de Carvalho. Rooms at the San Michel can be very large. As of 2015, not all of the rooms are renovated.
We stayed over Christmas for 5 days. We paid a very reasonable rate for 5 days. Room are comfy, air conditioned and there are snacks in the fridge with pricing sheet on the table. The breakfast buffet has selection of fruits, bread and some hot dishes. Overall a decent breakfast to start the day. Front desk staff speaks english. Hotel is near downtown and some locals have made us aware about area being not safe at night. We did walk fromt train station most nights. There are multiple bars in area which are crowded. There is also police car near by most of the time. We didn't feel unsafe and as tourist, we always stay in group and take precautions so be smart and enjoy the economical value of San Michel. We were on 6th floor and had no noise issues.
Only good thing about the hotel is that its in the center of city of sao paulo. Very bad area after sunset tourist should not even think of getting down in alone or be ready to get mugged at least. I had been strictly advised not to get our of hotel alone in the night even for a walk without any money or anything.
