Porto Alegre, Brazil
Reviewed 1 January 2012

Pros: really near Teatro Municipal and downtown, easy to get the train (one block from Anhangabau station), breakfast really good (everything simple, but nice), good bed, good shower and good price (R$100 for a couple). Cons: old hotel, rooms at the front are noisy, poor people asking for money at the streets, dangerous to walk at night.

I stayed in Amalia Hotel feb. 2010. They were refurbishing some parts of the hotel and had already re-painted most of the building on the inside. The prices, considering the location (downtown, near Teatro Municipal) were very good (about 50 dollars for a couple). The rooms had fairly old furniture (closet, TV set, bed and bath), but nothing so disappointing....

Staying in Republica

Neighbourhood Profile
Part of the historical centre of São Paulo, República was once a fancy residential area. República Square holds a craft and food fair every weekend, right by the subway entrance. Nearby, one of the neighbourhood’s main attractions is the Italian Building, where you can see the city from the 42nd floor. The Copan Building also deserves a close look, with 1,160 apartments and a huge floor area that inspired filmmakers and other artists. To get the feeling of São Paulo in the beginning of the 1900s, visit the Municipal Theatre – you will be amazed by its architecture. The area also features several galleries. República is a great area to explore during daytime, but use caution if visiting alone at night.
